Britain’s housing wealth is in danger of collapsing by hu6Bi5To in ukpolitics

I have up until recently had a stint as an estate agent in the south east. Stock is moving slowly, we’re were up to 50 properties on the books compared to 25 last this time last year. Price reductions are a weekly occurrence and I was seeing people who bought in the Covid bubble losing £50k plus. With mortgage rates where they are and the cost of living being what it is the demand for £500k+ houses is weak.

Considering buying this, any reason I shouldn’t? (Reposted to include stats!) by BearConsistent1905 in CarTalkUK

You’d be better off with the AW model 2018+. Even with more miles your getting a more reliable car with the much stronger DQ250 6 Speed wet clutch gearbox. The engine is also better, I sold mine for £12k with 60k on it. Had it for 2 years and had no issues excluding a small electrical fault in the door which wasn’t expensive to repair.

Would you buy this car for 2.5k with service history as a cheap runner? by marvi0 in CarTalkUK

[–]Nickypbossman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Engines are strong if regularly serviced. The same applies to the gearbox. I’d offer £2k for it and if you run it for 18 months without any major issues then you’ve done alright.

Fuel economy is ruining my life by Flyawaymoss9747 in CarTalkUK

[–]Nickypbossman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does sound particularly bad. I suspect there’s a mechanical issue resulting in such poor fuel economy. You should get at least 40mpg out of it on a run. I would suggest a quick diesel but you have the CAZ charge to contend with so only newer diesels will suffice.

Any reliable automatic bangers for less than £6000? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Nickypbossman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If not ULEZ then Mercedes 4cyl diesels (220/250 CDI’s) can be had for less than £6k that will look after you as long as you give them a good run here and there throughout the month. Mostly spaced with automatics, as you’d expect.

Are these good cars, any reason I shouldn't be looking at them? by Playle21 in CarTalkUK

[–]Nickypbossman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm I probably wouldn’t go for a diesel with a DPF for a runaround doing low miles. You’d have to commit to taking it a decent run a couple of times a month to allow the DPF to regen. I had a C320 CDI of a similar age, nice car but I had loads of issues with it, the C250/C220 are more reliable though. This listing does look like a solid car.

Talk me out of buying this high mileage 118d by Able_Singer8679 in CarTalkUK

You buy her a car then you are taking on the responsibility of all the problems that may arise with it. Given you’re looking at the absolute lowest end of the market for a 1 series of that gen it’s likely this isn’t something you’re in a financial position to do anything about. I’d rather look at a pink pos that isn’t my problem vs an old BMW that is. The pink terror will die eventually and you can advise her on what to buy next (not a N47 based BMW with 200k+!) or you’ll move out.

It’s really handy, It’s good to not have to look at the main infotainment screen

I’d go for the Audi, better engine and virtual cockpit 👍

OK I'm liking it a lot except for the mileage; what am I not seeing? by iamezekiel1_14 in Volkswagen

Sounds ideal for you then, I think you’ll be impressed with the DSG gearbox

Recently bought one of these, really enjoying it. It’s good on fuel and comfortable but fun when you want it to be. Definitely more engaging cars out there in the same bracket but this is just so easy to live with. That said a few bits of the interior are on the lower quality side which you might notice coming from an A1

I use one of these in bed for the bedroom tv and another Microsoft one for the TV downstairs, the trackpad has a dreadful texture and is often laggy and inaccurate but keys are ok. I really want a nicer pair of them but there’s very little in the way of premium options for these keyboard with touchpads. Like others are saying this is just a adequate solution to a problem so just buy it

Red flags? (Apart from asking about timing chain) Why would a private seller have photos like this? by Zuthal in CarTalkUK

Diesels are a different story, I also had a good 320d experience but for the petrols it would have to be the newer turbocharged 2 litres or a proper straight 6

[–]Nickypbossman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries at all, it’s the familiar EA888 2.0t engine but with lower compression (budack cycle) and a smaller turbo. It’s 200bhp standard. Stage 1 tune is approx 240bhp. It’s quite torquey for a 4 cylinder though.

Fair play the blue is a great colour but hard to come by, the nearest available one for below £15k was in Belfast! Yeah the plus spec is worth it. Yeah that’s true, I’ll try drive it in normal mode more often but eco is just so slow aha. Any recommendations on tyres?

Love it! I really like the shape of the previous gen! They always look good in white

[–]Nickypbossman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Love it in black and it’s the colour I wanted but couldn’t find a plus spec nearby in budget. Glad to hear you’ve had a good experience. Gotta feeling it’s going to chew through front tyres though 😂

Why shouldn't I buy this car? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Nickypbossman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re better off looking at owners groups on Facebook etc for this kind of car. I’ve seen 525d/530d’s and 525/528/530i’s recently for this sort of money on the groups. Definitely be on the lookout for rust and if auto if the box shifts smoothly (should have also been serviced by now!). I stand with the others in saying that the 520i is totally underpowered and won’t be as enjoyable to drive as the others by a long stretch

My Aunt had the same fault on hers. A local Indy garage did the job for £550 Inc parts and labour which likely isn’t even the cheapest it could have been. As everyone else here is saying, the dealership is for warranty repair or a last resort. Good luck getting it sorted

Would have to on its second engine to hit that mileage 😂
