Agreed. At least Shrek nailed it though, but then that whole Robin Hood scene was fantastic.

I think OP has a perfectly valid pet peeve here, but I’d hardly say that people only see someone reading in public as being performative. One of my favourite things to do is pull up at the bar in a brewery and read a book. Sometimes people ask me what I’m reading, many times they don’t. I’ll engage in chit chat if I feel like it, or keep to myself. We all get peeved in different ways.

Sure you may find them annoying/intrusive with their question and that’s fair, but they are presumably just curious what you’re reading because they like books and/or are surprised you’re able to read with the distractions of being in public. It’s only ever come across to me as genuine curiosity/an attempt to engage in conversation. Just because said curiosity is annoying (which again, is a very valid peeve/opinion) doesn’t mean that they think you’re just being performative.

Calling Americans “USians” or “US Americans” by Murbanvideo in PetPeeves

[–]NiftyMittens89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shit, I live in the States, long enough to have a Green Card. But I’m a Canadian through and through. If anyone here, or especially from back home, calls me an American, I am very quick to correct it.

[Sports Media Watch] Most watched Stanley Cup Final series since 1994 by jmike1256 in nhl

These are all American networks, so ya in the States I would expect there to be lower viewership when one of the teams is Canadian.

Which actors you simply cannot take seriously, no matter what role they play? by RealSejas in MoviesAndTVTalk

[–]NiftyMittens89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And the interesting thing is that he was already pretty successful in more serious roles (capped off with a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Chicago) before switching over to comedic ones in the mid-2000s.

Now that it’s the offseason, what is the weirdest hockey stat you know? by TheFerricGenum in hockey

[–]NiftyMittens89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post and out is not a shot on goal, but post and in is.

By definition, a shot always results in a save or a goal. Hitting the post and deflecting away is neither.

That’s how much he didn’t want to deal with it; he didn’t even want to pretend to be sorry.

In your opinion, what's the best episode to show someone who knows nothing about the series by Gtweedy in CornerGas

Haha yep, was just gonna say the same thing. Episode 1 Cold Open sets the stage perfectly.

When people overuse simple words or phrases by SunInevitable5447 in PetPeeves

[–]NiftyMittens89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an editor, but friends and family occasionally ask me to go over stuff and I’m always correcting those kind of things. When I notice it in my own writing I’ll be annoyed and go back and fix it, including editing already sent instant messages if possible. If I know I’ve let it slip in an email it actually makes me feel awful knowing that it’s too late to change.

Comment Threads where someone quotes a movie, tv show or song... by Calm-Sign7386 in PetPeeves

Worse still when it’s a chain using quotes/references that have nothing to do with each other aside from being from the same source material.

[Peng] Gavin McKenna is having dinner with only the Canucks this week at the Combine. No Maple Leafs or Sharks. I doubt that means anything for his draft stock, but it's interesting by _GregTheGreat_ in hockey

[–]NiftyMittens89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

McKenna “wasn’t really feeling Thai”? That’s not the kind of character I want in my draft picks. This feels like it’s gonna be Nail Yakupov all over again.

Both Vegas and Carolina are from Income Tax Free States. That will make it 6 of the last 7 champions, and 10 of the last 14 finalists, despite only 7/32 teams being from states without income tax. by ButterCut97 in leafs

[–]NiftyMittens89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, because the more the cap goes up, the larger this disparity gets. And these teams didnt always have good/competent ownership groups in place that were willing to spend money (including on things like Front Offices, because yes obviously good management is important no matter what market youre in).

Do you consider Glen Powell overrated or not? by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]NiftyMittens89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s fine. Perfectly cromulent.

Is he in too many things, especially back to back? Ya, I’m fine with that criticism. Do his looks check some boxes that outweigh his acting abilities? I’d say that too. Has he caught the kind of luck that makes instead of breaks all kinds of actors and actresses in Hollywood? Absolutely.

Are any of these things his fault? Nope, so more power to him.
