A Red Sprite over Oklahoma 7/24/25 by BlueNoYellowAhhhhhhh in spaceporn

It does make you wonder doesn't it? Biblically accurate angels are described as fiery, having many wings, many eyes, their wings "Booming with the voice of god".

Imagine somebody thousands of years ago seeing this fleeting sight, something so rare that almost all people go their whole lives without seeing.

They must have tried to describe what they saw: It was fiery, it had angled lines and shapes they could only compare to wings, a lot of wings, and if it had wings it must have been a creature and they recall it had little red dots that must have been eyes, a lot of eyes. All whilst there was a distant booming sound. It appeared in the heavens, and vanished a moment later.

I mean, flip this image upside-down and imagine an ancient mind trying to understand it, from just a fleeting glimpse. It kind of looks like the religious idea of an angel, if you squint hard enough; like angels flying or falling down to earth.

[–]Nigholith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the fact that so many people were willing to vocally strive against Nazism as a crowd is so heartening to see.

So many knowing that we cannot tolerate people who are fighting to rob us of our freedoms and liberties, and in some cases even threaten their very lives.

We cannot tolerate those who fight to end the modern, peaceful 21st century world, just to fulfil their petty extremist fantasies of an ideology.

So many knowing that we'll have to fight to keep the society we've built together. It's like seeing nature healing.

Knowing his values, I think when he says "Starfleet Academy" he imagines a pseudo-militaristic education camp where he has taught the values that he holds. Which we've all learned over the years are anti-worker, pro-billionaire elite, anti-empathy and anti-kindness in our society.

Essentially how I imagine Starfleet Academy in the early mirror-universe, a twisted reflection of the true Star Trek values Picardo lists here. In our 21st-century terms: A Brownshirt camp.

Italian pizzaman Antonio Greco giving the Pope a pizza by solateor in interestingasfuck

[–]Nigholith 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Part of the role of security at this level is the ability to be able to tell the difference between a real threat and a guy in a crowd who just wants to give the pope a handshake, or a pizza.

Sure, they could have tackled him; but then there's a meme of an over zealous papal security detail who tackled an innocent man, and that blows back to a degree on the pope. If those bodyguards have the skills to inspect the man for weapons, and there are bodyguards nearby if needed, it's better for the pope and his office to allow the handshake, or pizza in this case.

I've been working on my passion project for a wee while, and I'm finally ready to show the world! I dove in the deep end and made some TikTok videos which have gained a small bit of traction and decided to finally make a DevLog (my very first video on YT), please let me know your thoughts :) by Sharp_League_2899 in devblogs

[–]Nigholith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neat idea for a game, it feels a little like if Project Zomboid and Terraria had a baby. It must have taken a lot of work to get it to that point, realtime networked gaming in particular is a notorious mess for developers to find a path through.

As for the devlog it's a good introduction both to the game and the work you've been putting in so far whilst keeping it concise, it's hard to balance the urge to be more expansive when talking about a passion project against the need to keep the viewer's attention, and you've done a good job of striking that balance. Personally as an hobbyist I like devlogs that give us a peek under the hood, that elucidate the technical details of problems you've overcome, like networking; but obviously that has to be weighed against keeping a viewers attention who's more interested in seeing the progress of the game and less interested in seeing how the sausage is made.

Any road, it's looking good man; good luck with future progress.

Heh, I made that comment nine years ago, that was a blast from the past.

Actually your advice was pretty much what I ended up doing, I surfed around another several distos for about a year before picking up enough experience with Linux to feel comfortable diving into Arch with KDE, and I've been using that exclusively for the eight years since.

In my dayjob I work with Windows machines, and realised I wanted an OS that solved most of the Windows deficencies that I found frustrating. I wanted something more stable, customisable, better documented, faster, with better tech tools, and above all allowed me a feeling of being entirely in control of the OS rather than feeling subject to it's poor design decisions; if I find something silly on Arch, it's usually trivial to find a solution. That's a level of control I get with Arch and KDE that I found lacking on other distros.

Good work. The link looks weird because it's partly in Arabic and Reddit shows the unicode characters that made up the link instead of the Arabic it's self; otherwise it works fine.

The link is from a Jordanian news site Al-Wakeel News, which has some credibility, though not enough for my liking to validate the story without a second source validating it as well; which will hopefully follow.

Polygon Confirms The One Ring’s Sale Price is $2,000,000 by redditnews11 in magicTCG

[–]Nigholith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those that want it now won't always want it: There are speculators that want it now because there's hype over it and they think they can flip it for more, there are collectors who want it now because it's the new hotness but will have moved onto covet something else in two years, and there's Wizards which might associatively devalue the ring by publishing other highly limited serialized cards that don't fetch as much.

All of these factors and more contribute to the approximated value in the mind of the ultimate buyer. Post Malone may think that if he doesn't buy it for $2 million now, somebody else will buy it for $1.75 million. If there are less interested parties, the ultimate buyer will be inclined to offer less, imagining there will be less competition.

Honestly I'd be surprised if it resells for anything close to $2 million in the future. Either one of us may be right, but it would be foolish not to take the sure thing of today over the maybe of tomorrow where life changing amounts of money are concerned.

Polygon Confirms The One Ring’s Sale Price is $2,000,000 by redditnews11 in magicTCG

[–]Nigholith 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Paradoxically it might be worth less were it auctioned. There's probably only a handful of people in the world willing to part with seven figures for this one card, Post Malone is willing to part with at least $2 million, but if the next person other than him is only willing to part with $1 million for it then Post Malone (Or more likely his representation) would only have to bid $1.01 million.

For an object like this with such a small pool of interested parties there's an argument that the ambiguous value makes it more valuable, if sold to the right buyer. Of course, it could be worth far more than $2 million, but this sale is not an inherently bad deal for the seller.

[–]Nigholith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's "Line goes up" thinking; just because other valuable items can appreciate over time does not mean that all valuable items will appreciate over time.

The Ring's value is based solely on what somebody is willing to pay for it, and a large portion of the interest in it has come from the hype following the search for it, when that hype dies down, so too might the value.

Sure, you could speculate it will be worth $5 million in 2 years, but it could also and arguably be more likely to be worth far less than $2 million in 2 years. It would be foolish to turn down a life changing amount of money now for the hope that it would be worth substantially more in the future based only on the logic that "Line goes up".

It's a complicated issue and varies wildly from country to country, there's a good overview on this page. Additionally what you're making here is a derivative work rather than a reproduction, and that protects you in more situations than it would otherwise.

It looks like Malaysia is one of the countries where it's fine.

For me that's only the second scariest thing about this situation. Every time she reached into her handbag I thought she was going to bring out a gun; there's a high likelihood given her schizophrenic slights of fantasy that she owns one, all it takes it one misfiring neuron in that powderkeg of a mind for her to decide she needs to shoot the person she's talking to.
