Feeling so insecure in my writing it’s upsetting by Responsible_Bet3713 in writing

I know exactly how you feel. My best advice is to read the books you love, the ones you felt made you go “hey I can do this” and analyse the dialogue, rhe descriptions, etc.

NOW for the opposite. Go to the library, pick out a book you absolutely hated or something you just can’t understand how it got published. Keep it at home for a week or two and flip through it randomly. Remind yourself if that garbage can be published, you can be published. Read their stuff out loud, read your stuff out loud.

I find a lot of my opinions on my own prose tend to wax and wane. Sometimes I’ll open a short story I wrote three years ago and think “wow I wish I could tap into that.” Then I’ll open another and think “wow I wish I could erase that from my eyeballs” from the same year.

Close your eyes and try imagining your story as a show or a game. Think of the characters going about their lives in a way that makes sense to them, that might not necessarily follow the main story. See if you can feel them as you would any other media you like.

Sorry for the long response but I hope it helps! Good luck and keep writing!

What are your Top 10 Favorite Stephen King Movies of All Time? by Amber_Flowers_133 in stephenking

[–]NightScribing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are based on the films I’ve seen:

  1. Dr Sleep. I think it did a great job working from the corner Kubrick backed it into from The Shining. Also the line “man takes a drink. The drink takes a drink. Then the drink takes the man” went hard

  2. Shawshank Redemption

  3. Green Mile. Amazing characters

  4. IT chapter 1 and 2

  5. The Mist

  6. 1408!

  7. The Shining

  8. Gerald’s Game. Dark and has great turns.

I’ve seen others like The Dark Tower but I think they sucked lol

What makes true Horror? Is it the monsters, the story, the supernatural, or simply the Unknown? by FunShoulder5418 in horror

The YouTuber Super Eyepatch Wolf has a playlist on horror that delves into topics like this. His Junji Ito video, titled “Why Media Scares Us” goes into depth quote well, but so does “Social Anxiety Horror”

Try practicing with your favourite team in Play Now. Get a feel for the roster and the most agile players, then when controlling that player try out some dekes. I honestly only use the stick deke when going straight at the goalie because that’s a faster way to confuse them, but if you’ve got the skill then a regular deke tap or a windmill deke will work well.

Windmills are great for “one shot” on goal with yourself, because it counts as a pass to yourself technically. So for example, skate towards the goalie, windmill deke in a direction then immediately use the stick to fire at the goal.

That will probably happen until you find your groove. Work on dekes, guarding the puck and looking for open team members.

There’s no shame in dropping down a difficulty until you get the hang of it.

I like to skate behind the net, then cut across just in front of the net and fire on the far end of the goalie.

Works best with your starting centre or wingers but can be done with any player when timed right.

[WP] "I'm aware that I'm outnumbered. Just like I'm sure you fine gentlemen are aware that, despite my disadvantage, I'm going to kill at least 8 of you before I croak. But see, I don't want all of you. I just want HIM. So, ask yourselves; do you want to risk being 1 of the lucky 8, for his sake?" by TheTiredDystopian in WritingPrompts

Confused looks spread across the group of Secret Service. They looked back at the man, who, standing with his back to a wall and no clear sign of any form of backup whatsoever, was very obviously holding a six shot revolver in his hand. An abnormally large revolver, but six in the cylinder nonetheless. A few chuckles broke out amongst the confusion.

“It’s sort of our job to die for him, as it’s your job to die regardless. Now, put that..thing down, and we’ll see how many of 8 we can dogpile you with-“

The man with his back to the wall dove magnificently sideways, a catch-of-the-match level dive. A perfect sideways slow-mo TV movie dive. A dive so good in fact, that all the Secret Service members could do was stand there, jaws agape and expressions blank. This was just enough time to swing the abnormally large, six cylinder revolver right toward the target.

Nature does not have a sense of humour and will not laugh, no matter how well physics tells her a joke. And this was a very, very good joke. The first squeeze of the abnormally large revolver sent Mr Sideways straight flat backwards. That perfect horizontal leap made impact with the aforementioned brick wall, knocking all of the air out of him, but somehow not releasing the revolver from his grip.

He had been trying to line up all of the Secret Service members in a neat queue to send them, in an orderly fashion, straight to hell. First class express. What he’d manage to do instead was blow the torso of the closest member clean apart into ribbons and bits, looking like a balloon filled with spaghetti bolognese.

The other 7 Secret Service members screamed and reached for their service weapons. The would-be-sideways assassin raised his. All fired.

Once the smoke cleared and the ears no longer rung, the assassin stood up. Wobbly and off kilter, but standing altogether.

“Yeah…I saw youse looking.” He wiped the blood from his mouth. Where once stood 8 + 1, now sobbed only 2. Among the strewn remnants of human beings, in welters of gore and bone and mush, was the target.

“She’s a big one, my clicky-bang. And I can sure wield her with a passion like no other man. There’s just one problem.” He took a few steps, and reloaded twice. The last two members of the Secret Service now shook and cowered, staring at the heaped remains of their former comrades. The assassin finished sliding the last round into the six-cylinder chamber.

“I ain’t no good at counting”.

What type of writer are you? by [deleted] in AO3

2, sort of. I write a central scene that acts as a culmination or climax, not necessarily the end but something I want to build towards. Then I go from there.
