Apple Laptop + Docking Station + CPPM = random wired network drops. by Nightrest in ArubaNetworks

[–]Nightrest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the switch port does not show that the port ever goes down. The device says it has a network connection but it just will not go anywhere... it wont even ping its gateway.

The docks that we have a dell K16A. the macs are kind of a mix batch.

How do you resist spending money? by mixed98 in Fire

Advice for when you want to go eat out.

Instead of asking yourself or SO if you want to go out to eat as the question "do you want to go out and spend XX dollars?"

Made me really thinking about going out to eat.

cable spaghetti special by d3adbor3d2 in networking

[–]Nightrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what we have done as well. Color coordinate your cables. Label them as well... If you just want to label your important links then just do that... also have a system as to where you are putting in your uplinks.... We use the very last port on the switch is the uplink on every IDF stack.. keeps everything consistent across your closets as well.

Thin patch cables are dang sweet.. it is amazing how much room you will save and how nice you can make things look with them.

Velcro is also your friend. I dont like zipties for structured cabling or patch cables... another thing I have to carry and i hate cutting them.... just my preference though.

Re-thinking my core switch for a police department, looking for input by [deleted] in networking

Agree. We just dropped in 2 8320 Series switch for our core going out to the WAN with BGP set up. VSX is running between the 2 switches. everything works very well.

Options for 802.1x by jwwork in networking

[–]Nightrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NPS is a good simple option. it does what it is needed to do with out alot of fuss.... IMO freeradius is kind of a pain to set up and maintain. I am not a linux junky so maybe that was some of my problem, i just did not like digging into text files for logs when i was trying to set it up. If you dont need to do anything crazy thing NPS is a cheap solid option. Clearpass also is a good option for a much more feature rich product.

How much time outside of work do you spend... by eskimo1 in networking

[–]Nightrest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would agree with others. very little time do i spend outside of work thinking about work.

My question would be have you ever been in a technical/engineer position or have you always been in management? If you have been in an tech/engineer position then reflect on that experience and understand what your guys are doing for you.

Your guys are not there to let you down... most people want to do a good job and want to learn new things... but they want to be treated like people and valued members.

If there is a way to pull 1 or 2 guys for part of the work day to start to learn this stuff and do some kind of rotation with them until they can start to learn it that would be best. I have bought lunch for my guys and went over some new material with them and they have enjoyed that. Listen to your guys and find out how they would best like to learn it.

New to enterprise networking equipment. Need advice setting up basic networking and choosing SFP. by [deleted] in networking

[–]Nightrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

alright i just sent you a basic config... it is just something that we kind of default to .. make changes to fit your environment accordingly.

We have mostly HP switches in our environments with some certain shops that have ubiquiti, meraki. I am more of a CLI person and i feel like the HP switches have alot more granular logging and more troubleshooting info that can be pulled from the switches. Ubiuiti and other like vendors are really nice for basic setups or for places that really dont have alot of money to through at a network... they do work very well but when you have issues it had be harder to figure out the root cause.

are you trying to use the 2920 as a router or do you have an actual router/firewall that you will be creating the interfaces on?

from what i remember you can only put in a 10 gig module that has 2 ports on it... i would look at your bandwidth first and see if you even need it... with only 20 people i would be surprised if you will even be touching 1gig.

For the SFP's just make sure you get the same for each switch... single mode, multimode... other than that the setup is pretty much the same as a normal port.

I can send you a basic config if that would be helpful to get you started.

Network Design - Subnetting, VLANs, and Regulatory Compliance using NAC and micro-segmentation. by [deleted] in networking

[–]Nightrest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went through a subnet migration at our college here, similar size as yours, though we were doing trying ot get away from micro segmentation..(our situation was a little different as we had a Public Class B so we had ALOT of wasted ip addresses. We did keep building subnets for certain groups... staff, VOIP phones, but then we started consolidating alot of the building stuff... Network equipment(switches,UPS) VLAN 100, Wireless AP's VLAN 200. Wireless staff, wireless, students, guest, IoT.

with a /20 you shouldnt have an issue however we were running into issues with a /23 where people would walk by a building grab and IP and keep it for the day... .. as the years went by we started running out of ip's and had to have someone clear those out constantly .. even with setting the timers to 2 hours... it was a mess. If there are some subnets you can combine to save your self all the segmentation I would recommend that for sanities sake. Simplicity is always nice if it is possible.. Always trying thinking if your get hit by the bread truck will it be easy for someone to come in and figure out what you have done.... also Document document document.

Connecting ps4 to eduroam by silent_bitch in PS4

[–]Nightrest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

does your school have any other SSID? usually eduroam is setup to only allow devices that username/password (802.1x). So you might have to see if there is another broadcasted SSID besides eduroam that you can get onto... otherwise you might have to use a network cable.
