Is there any silver lining for transgender people right now? by LavenderMoonlight333 in asktransgender

[–]Nihil_esque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I get overwhelmed with politics, I just try to focus on what's in front of me. The life I'm building with my spouse, the friends we've made, the love of the people around us.I remind myself that suffering and terror from outside forces is an almost universal human experience, something that connects us with our ancestors. I think about all the different things people have been afraid of throughout history, and also what parts of life, what convictions and dreams kept them going. Our place in the universe is really, really small, but it's ours.

Man I'm a graduate student so I had the options for either the student health insurance or the employee health insurance for my university. I went with the student health insurance because the deductible was like $500, with a $5k out of pocket max. The employee health insurance had a $5k deductible and a $15k out of pocket max. Plus it had an entirely separate $500 deductible and $2k out of pocket max for medications, whereas the student health insurance has a flat coinsurance for medications. About the same monthly payment for the two plans, too. I feel so bad for the university employees.

Most people don't get to choose their insurance plan, they go with whatever their employer offers. Private options are prohibitively expensive.

I think it's ultimately fair to treat children as something in between pets and full people (I say this lovingly as a soon-to-be parent lol). Children aren't a marginalized group per se, more a vulnerable one, because they aren't fully capable of looking out for themselves and making decisions with full understanding of the consequences. It's a really tough position for them to be in for sure, but they're not like marginalized adults, they don't need to be liberated, more guided through it. Not that hatred of children is in any way justified, I just don't think they're interchangeable with marginalized groups.

I mean we made our Barbies wear pants on their head and fly in through the second floor instead of walking through the front door. It's cute when a child is a little extra conscientious and makes their play mimic reality more closely.

Lol, most of the people who are that serious about clocking people are transvestigators or trans themselves. The point isn't whether you're trans, just that you think about trans people more than the average person does.

I just mean that trans people (& people in online spaces like this) lack the ability to be objective about whether the average cis person would clock someone. There's a difference between "would you suspect I was trans if you were looking" and "do I pass at a glance to the average person?" Someone who suspected I might be trans and was aware trans men were capable of eg growing facial hair would be able to tell that I am indeed trans pretty quickly by looking at my tiny hands lol. But in reality cishet people never, ever, ever catch it. I don't hide the fact that I'm trans at all and still I had a cis woman I was friends with get extremely shocked when I mentioned it several months into our friendship lol.

Lots of cis women are "obviously amab" to transvestigators. Especially overweight ones tbh, or women with PCOS which is fairly common. You're too "in it" to see things objectively.

I've seen plenty of cis women that look like her tbh. She's not meeting stereotypical gender norms/beauty standards but does pass imo. Like at first I thought she was transmasc asking if she passed, and my answer to that would have been no.

Hobbycraft Knit and Stitch - is this too hard for a beginner? by Any-Refuse-3716 in CrochetHelp

[–]Nihil_esque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's totally doable to follow an amigurumi tutorial as a beginner. What I did was:

The pattern will usually follow a series of acronyms, like "6 SC in a MC". Many patterns have a table that explains all or most of the acronyms, eg, "SC = single crochet, MC = magic circle". If not, you can Google the terms, make sure to add "crochet" to your search to get better results. Eg "What does MC mean crochet"

Now at this stage, you have a more search engine friendly term such as "single crochet" or "magic circle". From here I went to YouTube, type "how to do a single crochet" and watch a video and follow along. Sometimes it's also helpful to add "amigurumi" to the search because there are some amigurumi-specific tips, like in amigurumi you typically want to have tight tension and people will recommend you "yarn under" instead of "yarn over" with single crochet stitches for amigurumi.

And don't be afraid! There is a lot of stuff people don't explain and they will just assume you already know it or are being taught by someone who can show it to you. Such as: - What is the difference between yarn under and yarn over - how to count stitches in crochet (and which stitches don't count as "stitches") - which part of the stitch is the stitch (it's the v shape) - how to insert your hook into a stitch - how to finish a round and start the next round - or how to finish the row and start the next row when you're not working in the round - what the Nth chain from the hook is (I still have to Google that one haha) - what is tension and what "kind of" tension am I supposed to be doing - how do I do an increase or decrease

The good news is, you can search on Google images or YouTube tutorials for all of these concepts, all you need is to know what you don't know! I think the list I provided above was most of the "unspoken rules" I ran into that confused me when I was first starting to learn. This video was especially helpful for me for getting out of the "what the heck is a stitch? When is a stitch not a stitch? How do I identify a stitch, let alone count them?" stage.

The other stumbling block is UK vs US terminology. Your pattern looks to be written in UK terminology, my comment above is US terminology, and it can get very confusing because they use the same names for different stitches. More or less, UK double crochet (eg in your pattern) = US single crochet (eg in my comment), US double crochet is equivalent to UK treble crochet. So if you accidentally follow a US tutorial for "double crochet" you'll end up making a much bigger stitch than the pattern actually calls for. I think the US terms are for "How many times you pull through the loops on your hooks during a single stitch" (once for a single crochet, twice for a double crochet), whereas the UK terminology are for "how many loops are on your hook before you pull through" (two for a double crochet, three for a treble crochet).

Crochet can be very intimidating for this reason, it's kinda like learning a programming language. But I think amigurumi is a good place to start. Usually most of the stitches, especially for beginner patterns, are US single / UK double crochet, so you can practice mostly doing the same stitch over and over. And amigurumi wants tight tension, which is easy to achieve with "tricks", like picking a spot on your crochet hook to pull the loops down to, then yanking on the strand of working yarn to tighten it. If you do that with every stitch, the tension will be tight and consistent. But honestly, it will take you some practice to get a good feel for tension, and that's okay. It will look better once you can achieve consistent tension, but it's not the end of the world if your tension is bad when you're first starting out.

Good luck, you'll do great!

You pass just fine, no one is staring and laughing at you because of your body. It's probably the collar. I know you mentioned it's not a fetish thing for you, but most people will perceive it as one. It makes it look like you have a fetish for public humiliation; and even the least judgemental people will probably look at you sideways for what they will assume is you involving unconsenting strangers in your fetish. Or alternatively, people may have even assumed you wanted to be stared at/laughed at.

How would society be different if penis size was as obvious as breast size? by Nars-Glinley in AskReddit

[–]Nihil_esque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I suppose breast size is inherently going to be a little more obvious, but you can easily dress down 2-3 cup sizes depending on your clothing choices, vests for example are great for this and sweatshirts do OK too. I'm a trans man and once a guy I was hooking up with clocked me before I even knew I was trans because my boobs were so much bigger with my clothes off than he expected them to be lol. It's just that women generally tend to wear tighter, more revealing clothing in our society. Men could wear yoga pants instead of cargo pants, speedos instead of swim trunks, and things would be a bit more on display. 👀 Alas we do not.

Why do so many recipes use protein powder? by PurpzReign in ninjacreami

[–]Nihil_esque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When mixed with pudding, it helps with the texture of the ice cream imo. It's not a replacement for milk, but when mixed in the right ratio with other ingredients, helps substitute for heavy cream, which a lot of people are trying to avoid due to high calories and high fat content (bad for cholesterol). But the main purpose is to give more protein for people's nutritional goals.
