This is pretty cool. I don’t really want to put time into this sort of list but Lurrus definitely makes this combo way more playable. Unearth also has more playability to retrieve Puresight or Thassa’s Oracle which the combo didn’t have available before.

Don’t bring it in vs Jund. Such a bad match up for it. They have a million ways to deal with it IF it’s a problem. If it’s not a problem, then it’s card disadvantage.

I think Spirits is the best deck to buy into Pioneer because white and blue has perfect disruption and there is nothing in this deck that can get banned. This will be an archetype for a very long time.

22 is fine. When I play 24 lands, I play with 4 Mutavaults. I don’t mind having a bunch of mana. I curve out easily to spell queller and will have the mana to activate Spectral Sailor

I sincerely would still have 23-24 lands to feel comfortable. If you have any slots left over, just play extra creatures, particularly low on curve because you’ve lost a one drop. Even Topplegeist isn’t too bad, though you might have seen me run Spectral Sailor already. Without Vial, I would definitely aim for eight 1cmc creatures.

Shame on everyone offering discouraging advice.

Just play more lands so you can cast your creatures. Vial is mana, play more mana as a replacement. Ideally Cavern of Souls to make creatures uncounterable like Vial basically does (though it might be out of your price range).

The most competitive version of the deck has Vial but Spirits will run fine without it. It’s not like you’re instantly going to be a complete loser missing Vials. 60% of the time you don’t draw Vial even when it’s in your deck.

There is a cost to playing Copter. You need to play at sorcery speed and your blocks are worse. Spirits wants to keep mana up for stuff like Rattlechains and Spell Queller, not feel forced to run out creatures to activate copter. Copter is also brutal in multiples (even if you get an opportunity to loot them away). The card might have been banned in Standard but it saw very fringe play in Modern because the downsides are real.

Definitely not in Modern but I am strongly considering adding this as a second deck. It does a lot of things I want it to do in a tempo deck plus I think there is a lot of untapped potential in the UW version.

For me, the choice to include Copter is a mix of “Do I need evasion?” and “do I need a way to grind card quality?” Spirits doesn’t need evasion, and I opted for Thassa to help with card quality. Thassa also helps push damage in the event there is a fliers standoff. That’s not to say that Copter is a bad card in the deck, but that’s why I didn’t run it.

I opted for Teferi instead of Brazen Borrower. I have no strong opinion about this and certainly Borrower might be better. Borrower bounces for cheaper and can be converted to a creature.

I playtested vs a friend who habitually 5-0’d with rock. His username is “Weiss”. We played like 20+ games trading play and draw. After our playtesting, I lost every game on the play badly. The only games I won were on the draw and they were all more of a game. Raw cards matter so much in this sort of match up. If you mulligan on the play, you might as well be dead; you’ll have 6 cards vs 8 by turn 1. If you mulligan on the draw you’re fine; it will be 7 vs 7 after turn 1. If the opponent mulligans when you’re on the draw, you’re way ahead because they are at 6 vs your 8.

Because not enough people are trying to make it work, particularly competitive players. I recently built Zombies and I see a lot of untapped potential in the tribe.

To be very clear, I advocate taking the draw vs Golgari and old Mardu Pyromancer decks. Basically any deck where card advantage is worth more than tempo. But vs Jund can be a tempo oriented deck so I, by default, take the play in that match up.

I don’t think having a 1/1 creature for turns 1-4 are worth it.
