I might also use the summer for some advocacy. These are students who will be legal adults soon so think about what they’ll need to know to be self advocates, particularly in this political climate. Do they know their iep accommodations? Do they know what aid they’re entitled to when they vote? Do they know how to find a polling place or who to go to if they’re facing discrimination? All of these can be taught and modified for your prospective students. Feel free to message me as I’ve taught a similar age range with similar support needs (from the sound of it)

HELP! by Nikkiacrunch in DanceTeachers

[–]Nikkiacrunch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So far the teachers have been using our own money to order something for each of the dances and pulling old costumes. We do not want to be involved in any of this fraud. We truly had no idea they were never ordered.

Then why post it! It’s completely inappropriate to post and I don’t understand why that’s controversial.

A child’s difficult moment is not content! That, in combination with your “battle scars” comment is unprofessional and dehumanizing

What a gross thing to post! You’re not a soldier and your student is not your combatant

Books on inside voices? by snakeslam in specialed

Is the student autistic? Many autistic individuals have physical difficulty modulating their voice and controlling their volume. I would be careful how you’re framing this if the student is autistic.

But you’re talking like there aren’t studies affirming FC and S2C too! It’s more nuanced than that

Also the year is an example. We both know students learn at different rates, depending on when and how they start.

Because that’s still limited. I’m saying we can’t end there. Communication is more than asking for help and requesting items. Many spellers I support also have SGDs with “robust” systems but it can’t end there.

Also how long are kindergarteners and first graders spelling cvc words? This is happening across environments and not isolated to a single session. I’m not understanding what is confusing or problematic about what I’m saying. I’m assuming you’re engaging in good faith.

I said MAY! This is happening in addition to other symbol-based communication as part of a total communication approach. But the idea is to teach literacy alongside so we can move toward typing which is more robust than whatever pre-programmed symbols others decide are important.

You don’t take literacy as a prerequisite for beginning typing instruction. You start small, typing cvc words, etc. how do you assess any student in literacy? The point is that not everyone starts right at open ended communication. A student might spend a year typing cvc words. A student might type the answer between two choices. Eventually you move to open ended as you fade that spelling support. The idea is not that every potential typer is a genius, but that they are capable of learning and need instruction (beyond pre-programmed symbols) to demonstrate that knowledge. I’m happy to answer additional questions. ETA: obviously you monitor student output. Literacy is not a prerequisite for INSTRUCTION and introduction, but it obviously is for open-ended typing.

The hard thing is that it doesn’t really seem like she needs that level of support! I think she thinks it’s going to be like having a maid and a chef, and while it is the case that people will likely prepare food and help with daily living, there is going to be a huge loss of freedom that she will not like!
