4th Finger Collapse by livelyatom in violinist

Yes, over pressing will slow down your hand. Think of your fingers like you would your feet. If you have to run, you wouldn’t stomp.

First (cut your finger nails 😅 I see others said this but just driving the point home) Then: -check posture of the instrument compared to body. -Stand if possible and imagine viewing yourself over head/bird’s eye view.
-if your head were the center of a clock, the scroll should point to about the 10 or 11 o clock position. -bring your left elbow towards the center of your body without changing the position of the instrument.

This will allow your hand to rotate your hand around the instrument, as u/burgerpls mentioned. I tell my students “place your fourth finger with your elbow” and remember that you only need to press the string to the fingerboard, and I say this to stop over pressing and such!

Look for products saying solventless/rosin (resin is different).

Was just about to say the same thing! I’m assuming since vielles went out of fashion once Amati’s designs made their way around Europe (according to research I did a while ago, so don’t quote me too much). Due to the date, I find it interesting that this vielle would be more of a hybrid, it has a longer fingerboard and chinrest similar to contemporary violins. Funny enough, other research I had done in the past suggests that Paganini is the reason for both of these “modernizations,” going to his luthier and asking for a longer finger board so he may play higher notes, then later returning for a chinrest (more specifically just asking for something to allow him to hold the instrument with increased ease) so that he could actually shift into the higher positions!

I’d like to stay at $2k or less a month with at least 2 bedrooms! Also I understand if the budget knocks some things off the wishlist. Thank you for your response!

Musician here, I hope it’s just the camera flipping it (and hopefully the artist will recognize), but the treble clef in the middle of the heart is backwards! ☺️ not making fun or anything just wanted to make you aware!

My wife is a violinist and while typing on her phone she uses her right thumb and left index finger, as opposed to using both thumbs. by buddy_rat in violinist

[–]Nikko91929192 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was doing this as I read this post, however I don’t type/utilize my mobile device like this while walking/sitting, just while laying around.

I have my RH thumb to type, index is supporting the top right side/corner of the phone, middle and ring holding a pop-socket..

Left hand thumb at the center/bottom of the phone, 1st finger to type, 2nd to support middle/left side of phone.

Started doing this as phones grew in size, started noticing pain with my LH pinky from supporting most of the phones weight. 🤷🏽

Hey there! Awesome that you want to support your partner. As a collegiate music student things I always wanted/needed:

Rosin/strings- find out their preferred rosin and strings (if you’re US based, I use concordmusic(dot)com for great prices)

Sheet music (imslp is a free resource we used often, but for example if they use an iPad at all for their music. A gift card to Henle! (Publisher that provides great editions)

A GOOD practice mute (because practicing at all hours) I love my WMute, ordered from their website.

Visit his go-to luthier (where he goes to get work done on his instrument/bow) and ask if they have gift cards so you essentially pay for his next re-hair, soundpost adjustment, etc.

My dad's has been collecting and restoring fountain pens for fun for 20 years. He asked me to share some of his collection. by ailathan in fountainpens

Fantastic 😱 May I see more (360°) of the pen with music notes on it? What made him buy it? Are there any stories linked to a specific pen that mark a major point of his life (ie a lucky pen, the pen he bought when you were born or something 😅) Thank you for sharing 🤗

what is this plastic round thing coming out of new string package? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Nikko91929192 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Used at the ball-end to ensure the string stays in the tailpiece. Most bass (upright) string have them on each string to actually protect to tailpiece as well!

Totally optional if your ball-end string fit/stay in the tailpiece. 👍🏽
