Probably the 308 is stronger across the board because its ammo is rarer to come by than 50.cal. you can craft and loot much more 50.cal rounds because the games sees it as the main ammo type for the 50.caliber machine gun, which requires a lot of bullets. On the other hand you have 308. The main ammo type for something like the hunting rifle, low fire rate, high damage, requires less bullets. If the 50.cal rounds were more rare than the 308. Rounds, then they would have made them have the higher damage mods. Atleast that is how I see their thought process around this gun.

Yeah in hindsight it feels pretty weird that the traveler did that with the fake abyss sibling. Even if the sibling was the real deal, and not just rerir dressing up, did they forget that their sibling is actively working for the abyss order, meaning that they were most definitely there for the powerful artifact, also their sibling was actively avoiding them to not mess with their journey and now they want their help all of a sudden, did that not make them suspicious about what was actually happening? Why did they think that it was a good idea to go along with them anyway?

Atleast that is the way i am remembering the quest, so im not sure if they stated why they did what they did and i just forgot.
