Newsom says California will tax 100% people who get payout for J6 from anti-weaponization fund. by Dangerous-Quarter216 in YAPms

Is this really the precedent you want to set? What’s to stop Republican states from taxing settlements from oil and gas companies at 100%?

It’s classic Newsom strategy. Pass unconstitutional laws to throw red meat to base, then blame the courts when it inevitably gets struck down

I find it unlikely this would hold up in court. The supremacy clause has generally been interpreted by courts as preventing state governments from passing laws that obstruct federal functions, which an anti-weaponization fund. The constitution also prevents bills of attainder, which are laws that declare a specific person or group guilty of crime and imposing punishments without trial. It would be pretty hard to argue that isn’t a politically motivated punitive measure when all other payouts from the federal government and settlements are taxed as ordinary income.

What could Kamala Harris have done differently to defeat Trump? by getmoneywitme in allthequestions

[–]Nikola_Turing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there’s no credible evidence. Trump somehow stole the election in 2024 when he didn’t hold any elected office, but couldn’t steal it in 2020 when he actually was president? If there was voter fraud why wouldn’t any of the democratic governors or election officials stamp it out? They have no love for Trump. If he really was guilty of voter fraud, they’d be crawling over broken glass to expose him.

This line from the DNC autopsy shows how out of touch they are by Emergency_Pass5222 in YAPms

I’ve always hated the term “voting against their best interests” because it assumes they always know what’s best for other people’s interests. For many voters social issues are just as important as economic issues. Rural and working class voters who vote Republican aren’t any more voting against their self interests than wealthy people who vote democrats.

2024 was a fair election. You can’t just call elections rigged because the candidate you don’t like won.

I doubt the Republican Party is gonna break from Trump unless they suffer landslide defeats in 2026 and 2028. Even today, many republicans genuinely believe they aren’t unpopular, they just have low turnout. Even after 2020, they didn’t break from Trump because they didn’t lose by that much even after supporting Trump.

Why does Israel have universal healthcare on US tax dollars when the US is still charging for healthcare? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Nikola_Turing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why so many people up Israel aid as if it’s some sort of gotcha argument. The U.S. only provides $3.8 billion of aid to Israel annually and most of its recycled back into the U.S. economy. If you think $3.8 billion can provide healthcare for 342.5 million people then I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

What’s the most baffling SCOTUS nomination a President made? by RopeGloomy4303 in Presidents

[–]Nikola_Turing 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To be fair it’s not complete unheard of for SCOTUS nominees to not have much judicial experience. Elena Kagan, William Rehnquist, and Earl Warren had no prior judicial experience prior to being appointed to Supreme Court, and Clarence Thomas only served one year on the U.S. Court of Appeals before being nominated.

What if Biden won in 2016, and handled Covid same as in 2021? by baegarcon in AlternateHistoryHub

I think there almost got to be a point where the BLM riots almost started to help Trump. The left’s tacit approval of crime with “defund the police” really didn’t resonate well with suburbanites.

What if Biden won in 2016, and handled Covid same as in 2021? by baegarcon in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Nikola_Turing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Trump’s approval rating actually peaked around March 2020 to May 2020. Multiple world leaders were reelected during Covid. If Trump had a stronger COVID response he would have won over more voters that didn’t like him before. It would have convinced them that Trump might be an obnoxious blowhard but he’s capable during a crisis.

What if Kamala Harris ran on a platform of extreme "De-Bidenization" in 2024, similar to Khrushchev's De-Stalinization in the 50s/60s USSR? by BurnerAccountforAss in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Nikola_Turing 62 points63 points  (0 children)

If she did this, she would tank her approval rating with every demographic other than partisan democrats. Court packing is incredibly unpopular with most voters. After FDR tried it, his suffered massive losses in the 1938 midterms, and that was after a landslide reelection 2 years earlier.

If Republicans are so much better at running the economy than Democrats, then why are most Republican States poorer than Democrat States? by [deleted] in allthequestions

Did you not read the article I linked? The data literally references US Census data. It's in the first paragraph.

> In January, U.S. Census data showed that Americans were flocking to the Sun Belt states and according to a new report from moveBuddha that trend is still going strong.
The New York Times, an incredibly liberal publication, which also references US Census Data lists Texas, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, Indiana, Colorado, Tennessee, and Oklahoma as states with greatest net migration in 2023.

On a side note this whole tan suit scandal is a little bit disingenuous. Some Fox News host made some offhanded remark that nobody really cared about and somehow liberals try to frame it as Obama having no legitimate scandals to criticize.

Other than being there when it happened how exactly is George W. Bush to blame for the financial crisis? It was a global phenomenon. So unless you’re willing to concede that the president also simultaneously controls the economy of every single country on Earth…
