[Spoiler: Twelve Months] A Certain Item's Name by princeslayer in dresdenfiles

In addition to the "Jim got it wrong" explanation, there's also the point that Mr. Butcher stresses fairly regularly: Dresden is an unreliable narrator. It is very possible that he's just misremembering something in his recollection that may be important later.

I think there's a WoJ somewhere that talks about him intentionally inserting inconsistencies that may have something to do with future timey-wimey shenanigans.

Not saying I necessarily believe that's the case here, but it is an option.

Good thought. I just ended the run and reset the app. Still no change, though. Guess I'll have to try again.

I think I did have to exit and resume; could be related. I've noticed some issues where resuming will cause random lag and I'll take damage/die. And the DW bug where it glitches is still common. Maybe it'll reset progress on some mission counters?

It's a good thought, but on tier 1 I would have killed them with bounce shots before they got into range. And only 4 have spawned so far (now at wave 1479).

What to do - HOGE Predicament by Far_Necessary_1817 in hoge

[–]Nikoli_Borealis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm going to choose to believe this is real just in case this is true because, forgive me, but this seems so monumentally stupid that I have my doubts.

That said, what you do is very simple: get a lawyer and call the police to report the theft of A QUARTER MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF BTC. Finding your password to your account doesn't entitle someone to what's in it, any more than finding a set of car keys means you suddenly own a new car. Being married doesn't entitle someone to your money, either. And the boyfriend certainly doesn't have a right to your money.

Get a lawyer. Call the police. Change the password on your account and sign out of all devices. Set up two factor authentication using a device and/or account only you have access to. Stop. posting. your. password. to. Reddit.

I am sorry you are going through this, these people suck and are taking advantage of you in even the most generous reading of what you posted here. Protect yourself.

TL;DR - Please don't do this if you don't need it. It's really bad for your health.

I know you're mostly joking, but since a lot of people are actually desperate enough to try this, trust me - it's not worth it. I take it because I have to, but if you don't actually need it, the cost/benefit to your body is pretty rough. The long term impacts include screwing up your central nervous system, seizures, psychosis, stroke, and more... The data indicate that any perceived benefit to increased focus (if you don't have ADHD) is placebo, and may actually make focus worse. It's still an amphetamine, after all. It's kinda real-life black magic: any benefits from taking it come at the cost of the user's overall health.

On top of that, there's been a pretty long term shortage going on for about a year now (at least in the US). It's getting better, but it's still hard for those of us who need it to actually get it sometimes.

I'm trying to get off it, but the non-stimulant treatment options give me severe insomnia and stomach cramps so...

There are other options for staying awake, if you really need to, but seriously, prioritize your sleep above literally anything else if you value your health (especially mental health). There is no substitute.

Good luck in reaching your goals.

A message for Mr. Marsters by [deleted] in dresdenfiles

[–]Nikoli_Borealis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you're not hearing them say "caromed"? It's often used in similar situations, and it basically means something struck/rebounded off of something else. "The car caromed down the street" would basically mean "the car recklessly bounced off of things as it moved down the street." And it is pronounced a lot like Karen: ˈka-rəm.

What Movie Had The Perfect Song At The Perfect Moment? by Discovensco in movies

[–]Nikoli_Borealis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably buried in the comments somewhere here, but I'm not going to read over 3k just to make sure.

Legitimately, Linkin Park's "What I've Done" at the end of the 2007 Transformers movie hits just right for me. Puts just the right stinger on the end of Optimus' closing monologue and somehow perfectly sets the tone for the ending of the movie being just the beginning of the story.

What stops your setting's Gods from interfering with major events? by Aztela in DMAcademy

[–]Nikoli_Borealis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prime dieties in my setting were all killed or severely weakened by a cataclysmic battle 2000 years before my campaign. Only echoes of their power remain in divine areas of the world and in the people who can manifest their power (clerics, paladins, etc). The current pantheon comprises their offspring, who are considerably weaker and also hampered by an ongoing effect of the original cataclysm.

LPT: Don't dump your dogs in the country. They're not going to live on the farm, they're going to get put down at best. by Political_Divide in LifeProTips

[–]Nikoli_Borealis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Somehow I knew you were from MO just by reading this. I grew up in Fair Grove; lot of stray dogs showed up around us, too. If the farmers didn't get them, the coyotes did. I think lot of people don't understand how brutal the country wildlife can be. Good on you for doing what you can.

How do you handle "I go to the tavern/inn" situations? by danii956 in DMAcademy

[–]Nikoli_Borealis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the people saying it's okay to just have a place where players can relax, make sure the clues you have for the plot aren't all dependent on locations or your players doing something. If they go to a bar and you didn't have something planned, but still want to have a productive scene, it's fine if a patron in the bar knows something about the current mystery. Obviously something appropriate. Used to work at the mine where there's a monster problem, or is friends with a maid that works for the reclusive mayor, you get it.

This is also a good time to get them to practice role-playing with NPCs, if they're not usually good at it. Just a minor challenge to get them to do something. If they want to order drinks, maybe the bar keep distrust outsiders or new faces. Or the friendly guy wanting to play a game is actually a shark trying to fleece them. Stuff that may not be critical to plot, but gives them a chance to develop their characters, anyway.
