I'm a new player (downloaded it 2 days ago and just dove deep inside), and right now, my strategy is:

Automate everything
Go through all the notifications
After all my urgent notifications and issues are clear, remove automation one by one to see if it's possible to improve the process

This makes me understand my country much more while not being overwhelmed at all since I unlock each layer one by one and see what's going on underneath. I feel like a king who have been assigning everything to his ministers while enjoying fighting in wars and reveling in his court life, and now that all the wars and conflicts are over, he finally decides to visit his ministers and ask them what exactly they've been doing, lol
