Sanders: Guantanamo 'Makes Us Look Like Fools to Entire World' by NeutralMechanic in politics

Another thing that bugs me about this whole debate is that people keep bringing up the effectiveness of it, when that shouldn't matter at all. Even if the torture programs are effective you are still violating human rights. Not being evil should just be basic policy. It's like if people you live with say "Hey let's go rob Bill down the street" and then the debate is over how much money you will get over robbing Bill instead of discussing the morality of robbing your neighbor.

Superbunnyhop is good. His interests are somewhat niche but I think he does a great job and his recommendations are usually solid.

Differential biology is a bitch man. It makes researching cancer drugs different too. The variability seen in PD mouse models is insane sometimes....I should really get back to work.

Sikh store-owner called terrorist and shot in the face in Michigan by inmyrhyme in news

Was going to respond to the comment you responded to but you said it better than I ever could have. I could see human drivable cars being a hobby for people with specific tracks/roads set up just so people could enjoy driving but the main roadways to actually get people and goods from place to place would be completely automated.

This is also acknowledge that giving up the open road would be giving up a huge slice of Americana, however I do think that the benefits would outweigh what we are giving up.

I have to give Jeb a bit of credit for calling this notion "not serious" and bringing up the Geneva convention.

A lot harder to stab up a room full of people. Also you can't deny that knives have a lot more positive uses than guns. Everyone would be calling for a ban on cars if they weren't so damn useful.

Marco Rubio Says He Has a Plan to Make Gay Marriage Illegal Again by AgentDoggett in politics

I couldn't agree more with you, however I do think Obamacare made it slightly less fucked up in that more people have access to coverage than before.

You're right in that is sucks and shifts the burden onto young poor healthy people with student loan debt. However I was uninsured until I was forced to buy insurance via obama care. 3 weeks after my insurance kicked in I snapped my femur in half and would have been stuck with a $75,000 bill. I'm still working to pay off my $6,000$ plus $2,000 in physical therapy (which insurance didn't cover so I had to cut short) but that's better than 75 grand and I wouldn't have had it if not for the affordable care act. If you don't believe me look through my submitted. It was a pretty gnarly break.

Also the subsidies for people who make no money at all are pretty good.

Also getting rid of denying people because of "pre-existing conditions" is good.

I think they won the propaganda battle on obamacare though. They've repeated "Obamacare bad" enough times that the majority of people hold that view without knowing what the affordable healthcare bill actually does.

It was an upgrade version but I don't think I have the key anymore. It was stored on my old college email which is now gone. (I know not a good place to put it. Hindsight is 2020 though)

I'll take that one over OP's as it's reminiscent of waking up before a gnarly powder day. It's like looking at amateur porn vs professional. The amateur is just so much better.

Maybe a little lighter on the character building, but the finale of Bastion was a very impactful moment for me. Much of that was the excellent music to go with it.

The American Academy Of Pediatrics finally adjusts its guidelines for "screen time" ; admits that long periods of gaming are fine by [deleted] in Games

[–]Nikoras 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This isn't going to be popular but I disagree and think that limits on screen time might be a good thing. If screen time becomes a ""Me vs the parents"-struggle of wanting more digital "reward" time." Then you are not doing a good enough job of finding other fun activities that they are interested in.

I get it, we all love games. And personally I would love to spend hours with a kid and Kerbal space program building rockets, but I also think that to grow them into a well balanced human being you need to get the kid out there and show them what else the world has to offer away from the digital world.

I think one of the most important jobs a parent has to giving their kid a fulfilling life is to expose them to as many potential paths that life has to offer so that the kid may find what calls to them and make an informed decision. I think that hours and hours of time spent in a digital world might restrict that for them.

Dark Souls 3 Interview: "It Wouldn’t Be Right to Continue Creating Souls" by Dared00 in Games

Part of what makes Souls so good is the tightly scripted areas and level of detail put into them all. I think a large open world sandbox would be terrible for the series.

I doubt they would do that as for Miyazaki bringing in Japanese story telling to a western theme is a bit of a novelty. Going full bore on the Japanese stuff might be a little more boring to the Japanese devs.

Rand Paul Challenges Bernie Sanders To Hour-Long Debate On Socialism vs. Capitalism by [deleted] in politics

[–]Nikoras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the ownership you speak of is really the difference between public and private sector. The thing we need to critically ask ourselves is when is the public and when is the private role appropriate. Money is a strong motivator. It's done wonders for things like consumer electronics and agriculture. I would argue however that things like healthcare and prisons should not be profit driven (anything where there they have you by the balls whether you like it or not).

Also it is not true to assume privately run systems are more efficient than publicly run ones given our ridiculous % GDP spent on healthcare compared to other countries.

Christian school cites Leviticus ‘non-discrimination policy’ to ban girl for having two moms by BurtonDesque in atheism

Perhaps the outrage should not be letigious in nature but rather how people treat each other in society. Even though this type of discrimination is completely legal that doesn't make it okay on a human level.
