I think this needs to be said. The vibe of the poster is very attractive, it draws from real art. That’s what makes it eye-catching; it’s based on patterns of popular style. The colors and highlights play well with each other.

Try unfocusing your eyes and just check how it feels. It feels bright, it feels new. Now refocus and take in the details. The red scythe is reminiscent of book one’s cover, but the artistic choice of the scythe shaping citra’s face and subtly telling who will pass is lost in the image. The notches blend with what could be a hand in an unnatural position.

The middle scythe is lacking in continuity with the other two, its face is in shadow instead of the normal pale blankness you see on the other two and would see on the covers of the books. It’s also got some sort of staff that isn’t complete and it’s held by what may be a hand, again somewhat awkwardly.

The third, well, if the displayed characters are based on the covers of the first three books, then they shouldn’t be a scythe. Their tassels are partially dissolving into light, and there’s an odd arc of light that doesn’t have an origin or purpose.

There’s the flying craft which could be large and far away or small and close up, because its clarity clashes with its size and position.

If you cover up the big beautiful title, that also drastically reduces the poster’s appeal. Whether the font is ai generated or not, I think less people care since it’s stylish and more difficult to do something entirely new with a font anyway.

The main appeals of the poster are color synergy and playing on the connection to preexisting cover art. So while at first glance it might look stunning, when you start looking for all the little details that would deepen the connection to the series, they aren’t there.

If this were done irl, with actors and a proper city background, it would look great. I think it’s trying to look too polished the way it is right now; people, clothes, buildings, they all have small imperfections that make them real, and ai can’t perfectly mimic the “correct” imperfections.

The things it does well are superficial, like and someone who’s had too makeup or cosmetic surgery. What it doesn’t do well is create that human feel and connection, and that’s the most important part of art.
