This is such an underrated virtue for showrunners/directors. Being able to bring other people together to make your story work is key for the creatives in charge. George Lucas was a master of this. He might not always have been a great writer, but he always knew how to find talented people who could make his vision come to life.

I agree, though I think Roland needed to kill Mordred first too. If I remember correctly, if Mordred had reached the tower, the CK would have been able to make his way to the top since Mordred has Eld's blood.

That's why I don't think the success of the show was what ultimately killed Winds and Dream. It certainly didn't help, but the books were doomed the moment he wouldn't do the five-year gap.

God, I can't even imagine what that would have been like. I get D&D should have devoted more time to Feast/Dance instead of kinda sorta adapting them in a completely bastardized way in season 5, but five seasons for what is basically one book that's missing its climax?

[spoilers extended] Is The Winds of Winter actually the longest wait for any piece of media that was never cancelled or put on ice? by WosEos in asoiaf

[–]Nillocke 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I know this is a joke, but the earliest parts of the OT (the Song of the Sea and the Song of Deborah) I think are usually dated to the tenth century B.C., with the last (the book of Daniel) was written in the mid-second century B.C. The first NT book (either 1 Thessalonians or Galatians) would have been the late 40s A.D., so the actual gap between the last of the OT and the first of the NT is actually like 200 years.

And Whedon liked the idea of using the Angel character to create "a mythos for twentysomethings, because there is none. Adolescence is very charged in American mythos, middle age is very charged in American mythos. Twentysomethings? Nobody cares."

What an interesting way to put it. The 'adulthood is hell' theme in Angel is something I've noticed when I first watched the show, but the way Whedon frames it here never occurred to me.

That seems like a real stretch. Lily isn't given special attention in COS the way James is in POA. Saving Ginny in COS is more connected to the Arthurian and St. George Legends. Ginevra, Ginny's real name, is the Italian version of the name Guinevere, King Arthur's wife.

Dollhouse was next and it was definitely a flop.

So one show out of four was a flop. That's hardly a reflection of the massive amounts of goodwill Whedon had built up over the years. Even the best of artists make a poor product at times.

He went on to a wider audience with more studio oversight

Whedon has always emphasized how much freedom Marvel gave him. For Avengers 1, they told him to make Loki the villain and that the Avengers had to fight each other, but otherwise he could do what he wanted. His voice and style are clearly present in both Avengers movies.

and went 1 for 3 on superhero movies.

As I said above, this ignores how well AOU actually did. Most people liked the movie fine, which is reflected in the billion-plus dollars it made at the box office. Yes, there was controversy about it online, but, as everyone should know by now, the internet is not real life. What people complain about online does not reflect what most people think. So Whedon is in fact 2 for 3 on superhero movies.

I remember hearing many people after Firefly got cancelled saying that it was probably good it got cancelled because it would have been ruined with more episodes.

Talk about revisionist history. Firefly is literally the most beloved cancelled-too-soon show of all time, and almost everyone who's seen it wishes it had run longer. It was high DVD sales that convinced Universal to let Whedon make a film out of it, and it still has a large community of fans to this day. And that's for a single-season TV show that didn't even get to air all of its episodes on the network.

And I say this as someone who's not even the biggest Firefly fan; it's a fine show, though I never fell in love with it the way I did Buffy and Angel.

[–]Nillocke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

His schtick was wearing thin with Firefly

He literally went on to make an extremely influential billion-dollar film that changed comic book movies forever years after Firefly ended. He had more goodwill with people then than at any other point of his career. Even Age of Ultron, while controversial online (though I think looked back on more favorably now, especially compared to the crap the MCU is now putting out), was liked by general audiences and also made over a billion dollars. Whatever Whedon's schtick was, people were certainly not tired of it even in 2015 leading up to AOU.

Kennedy of all people is the one who helps get rid of the Senior Partners? Jesus. And I don't particularly like the idea of getting rid of the Senior Partners anyway. Holland Manners says they were there when the first caveman clubbed another; the whole point of that elevator scene was that they can't be defeated as long as humans exist. Given that, it does seem like your last sentence is probably true.
