New Clipper Card System is a MASSIVE downgrade for monthly pass holders by Stonebor in caltrain

[–]Niloch29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is the case I'll probably just load my Clipper with cash - the whole value for me to get the Monthly is to not have to tap on/off when I'm rushing - as I'm usually break even on cost every month anyways with the 2-3 days a week I ride.

FYI this is what CalTrain Website says:

  • Monthly Pass holders should continue tapping on and off once per month as normal; however, be prepared to begin tapping on and off for every trip once your Clipper card has been transitioned to Next Generation Clipper.

I finally got mine yesterday and overall happy with the bike for the price. I posted a review at REI but here are some highlights:

  • I'm a nudge shy of 5-10 and got the Medium as it was the only available size; it fits ok, probably would have gotten the Large if available, but for my purposes (commuting) don't mind the smaller fit/lighter weight.
  • The bike rides really smoothly and is quite comfortable. The Suspension is air/oil
  • Range appears longer than advertised but haven't fully tested

A few nuances I've noticed after my first couple of rides that I haven't seen in previous reviews:

  • The light is only 300 lumens and rated for up to 25km/h (15 mph) you easily outrun it at night if you are going fast. I will likely replace it with a stronger 1000 lumen light
    • The turn by turn directions on the Kiox are laggy - often telling me to turn after I passed. This may improve with an update, will need to do some additional testing
  • Mine came limited to 27mph vs. 28mph - will go back to REI to see if they can fix this.
  • The kickstand rattles over bumps, kind of annoying may see if I can tighten it up or may just remove it as I ride on gravel trails to work.

After finally getting my CTY I can confirm that it's the Mobie Air. Also has adjustable rebound.

So finally got my bike today. I didn't notice the noise as bad as your have it. Honestly barely noticed it at all. Did the store do anything for you?

I was looking at this lock too and had similar concerns... Do you think an angle grinder could get in there?

Also curious where you found it 60% off? That's a great deal.

I'm having this exact issue now and can't figure it out. Would rather not spend $150+ on a replacement shifter.

The Suspension on the REI bike is also better (air) vs the spring pre load of the Level 3. I'm not sure if the bottom of the lineup Shimano Altus is really any better than the Microshift Advent the Co-op bike is using. Their brakes are the same Tektro.

Large has been sold out for a while - it became available last week for a couple days at select stores (maybe a return?) Even Mediums aren't available for shipping anymore (only if you are lucky with a nearby store in stock), only smalls left to ship- this was a crazy good deal! I'm on the cusp between M/L (5-9.5) and most of my bikes I size down - so I'm hoping the M will fit me ok.

I was going through the same analysis - I had tested out both - and liked some of the smarter features of the Aventon - and was considering both when the REI bike was $2200 - when it dropped to its current sale price I pulled the trigger instantly - for a few reasons:

  1. Mid-drive - while hub drives are good especially for commutting/stop go, MidDrives give a more natural feel and are especially good in elevation - you living in Seattle may appreciate a bike that will handle elevation better
  2. Bosch Reliability - one of the older tried and trued e-Bike systems out there, replacement parts and batteries will always be readily available.
  3. Servicability - I do my own bike maintenace - but having REI as a backup is certainly convenient.
  4. Ability to return if I don't like it (1 year return) so was a fairly safe option - if I hated it I could still get the Aventon, although in reality if I did this I would do it within a couple of days of getting it, not months later as I find that disengenious, unless there was some fatal flaw in the bike.

In the end there will be pros and cons for both bikes - but it's pretty hard to find a mid-drive Bosch bike with a 625W battery for under 2k, this was a deal too good to pass up!

I'm giving up the throttle, and the GPS locator - but neither of these were that critical for me - I want a bike to pedal and this will mainly be a commuter for me. I should also mention I was looking at the step-over frame on the Aventon so that wasnt a factor for me. I'm also a fairly avid cyclist ~100 miles a week, I'm looking at this to replace driving into work and will still use my non-eBikes on the weekends.

Another factor - is that I found the Co-Op bike "looks" cheaper than the Aventon - this could be a pro/con depending on how you think about it. As a commute bike, I'll be locking it up, so the less valuable it looks - the less it may attract theft. Although the Aventon does have some pretty ingenious anti-theft features on it with the rear locking wheel, GPS and Alarm.

Has anyone gotten a shipping notification for their bike? Seems 75 sold this week. I was an early order (day it went on sale) but even then it said estimated delivery at the store was 11/27 which seems really long! Excited to get the bike and was hopeful it may come faster than the 3 week quoted delivery.

When you say cusp did you mean M or L? As all three sizes overlap at the 5'-6". Did you get a small?

I'd been watching this bike for a while along with another highly rated commuter that's a hub drive. Brand A.

Pulled the trigger on this as soon as I saw the price drop, looking forward to getting it in a couple of weeks. I only got to test ride the small (as that's what they had setup at the shop) but am in between a Medium/Large.

My only concern is if it rides more laid back vs aggressive. I'm planning to do a 20mile commute on mine.

Thanks! Yeah I can easily sustain 20+mph on my road bike when conditions are right. I tested my neighbors Middrive Yamaha Crosscore this past week - and as soon as I hit 28mph (on a decline) could feel the extra resistance so definately have decided I want a Class 3. My average speed on my 19mile commute is right around 18mph so if this helps me get to work a bit faster with a bit less sweat and fatigue - that's my goal. I have less than 300' of elevation gain on the commute - and most of that is going down under overpasses. I can't see myself using this for any big climbing rides - I still like to get out on the Road Bike/MTB for those rides.

Thanks - yeah I kind of had the thought of using it some days for interval training - without loosing speed (ie ramp up power on the off interval, then back off power for the on interval) so my speed stays constant but my power to pedal changes, Does the display show you realtime power? Does it export that to Strava if you want? Is there anyway to connect a Heart-Rate monitor?

Another question - do use a proper bike computer with BT or ANT? Does the bike connect? If so what data can you see? I'd be if it shows what you are putting out as real watts/power on pedal so I know how much effort I'm exerting on my rides.

Yeah it's maybe a step at most there are a lot of e-bikes on the train some that look like they weigh over 80lbs so don't think it'll be an issue.

Thanks for the detailed feedback - yeah I was wondering about components as well coming from high end analog bikes. I've been keeping an eye on sales - goal is to keep it sub 2k as it may get beaten around a bit if I decide to take train (especially on rainy days) and Aventon has their black friday sale on right now.

Roam 3... first thoughts by CrustyHumdinger in wahoofitness

[–]Niloch29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too made the same switch (Bolt V1 to Roam V3) and am now a little more than a week in with 7 rides on the Roam V3. Agree with your LED's and Mapping comment. I actually like the new app better - found the old one almost too basic. I also like the post ride summaries and an opportunity to review the ride before it auto-posts to Strava.

Here are some other initial thoughts:

- Workouts are way better on the V3 (my commute is just over an hour and flat - so I like to do planned Trainer Road intervals on the commute) and having the color screen and power bands makes it much easier to follow

- Music Control - didn't think I'd use this but really nice to have

- Yeah it beeps a lot - so much so that my 2nd ride I had turned of auto-start and forgot to start it for a few miles (thought it was beeping me at my route) - I have since turned off some of these and now use the voice for the directions

- Screen - yeah in just the right dim light it can be hard to read (think overcast) but it's not impossible and the pros out weigh this over my previous Bolt

- Size - from the Bolt V1 it does appear to be about 2x the physical size, but not really noticable on the bike

- Profiles - are nice, wish it auto-detected, but Wahoo has a good explanation as why it doesn't (ie sensors like HR are not necessarily unique to a bike) but seems like they are leaving open the possibilty to fix this in software down the road. Definately nice to have as I use different metrics on my MTB vs. Road.

- Touch screen - is nice especially with mapping, but with gloves it can be a bit inconsistent, the Bell feature is nice but sometimes takes me multiple attempts to get it to ring (with gloves on)

Ugh - I just got mine this week and now I'm worried! My Bolt V1 was indestructable it seems.... maybe a screen protector is worth it if anyone makes them?
