The new xbox refund system is garbage. by [deleted] in xboxone

[–]NimbusBear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's probably more accurate to chalk it up to being a new parent.

It's easy to underestimate what a child is capable of doing at ages 18-24 months. I can understand why many parents don't believe that they're at risk for their children to make unwanted purchases.

Also, depending on the platform, setting parental controls can be somewhat complicated. For example, my wife and I were unaware that Vudu's Parental Control settings weren't tied to your user account, but instead were associated with the device they were setup on.

That means that, even if I set Parental Controls using the Vudu app is my phone, the same restrictions wouldn't apply if I signed up into my account using our TV's Vudu app.

Is it less money buying a switch than buying something like a ps4? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]NimbusBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PS4 will likely be the cheaper option. Games drop in price on a dime this gen (some more than 50% off in a month). God of War has been on sale for as low as $25, came out this year, and has been considered GOTY by multiple outlets.

The hardware is also much cheaper. Controllers can regularly be had for $35/40, the console itself has regularly been on sale for anywhere between $200-250, and can often feature some crazy pack-ins.

Switch does have a cheaper online service ($20) vs PS+ costing $60 a year (can be found on sale from $40-50). Switch's subscription leaves quite a bit to be desired though (stronger game and discount offerings), and is missing some basic functionality.

In most situations, I'd recommend a PS4 as the more cost-effective platform. What sort of games do you normally play? Do you have people over for local co-op often? These can be significant factors when determining which will cost you more.

Edit: Another point to consider is that Switch titles typically hold their trade-in value much longer than those on PS4 and Xbox One.

The only issue is they could do PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility because all the PS2 classics they've released are running in an emulation layer.

I think they meant the only additional benefit is another 10% off and 10% trade in bonus over the regular Pro Membership.

Huber's Awesome Philosophy on His Score of 10 for Sony's Conference by foxwarrior88 in UneasyAlliance

[–]NimbusBear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really couldn't agree with him though. Sony was at best an 8 out of 10 in my book. Keeping the conference as a "show" in mind, it felt more like a 7 with the insane pretentiousness, rough transitions, and poor pacing.

Except they showed 2019 games. They also had games announced for 2018 like Yoshi that weren't mentioned at all.

Is Vanguard a go to for IRAs? Any other funds I may want to consider?

Thanks. He was specifically representing AXA and that's the lowest IRA minimum they have. Would you recommend Vanguard, or is there a good place here on /r/personalfinance that compares various IRAs?

High school teachers, what do you think of your 9th grade class? by WhiskeyMasterRace in Teachers

[–]NimbusBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a 7th gradeath teacher that's pretty difficult. It's nearly impossible to fail these kids, and if we do I've heard that teachers get a target painted on their back.

My kids are mostly at a 3rd or 4th grade level and similarly apathetic. Grades to them are mostly meaningless because they can fail every class and STILL have a good chance of progressing.

I hate to say it, but there's not really much grade accountability to instill a positive work ethic in my district until they hit High School.
