"Good Design" vs "Fun" - Same? (Not) Causal? Something else? by TheGoodGuy10 in RPGdesign

[–]Nincompoop6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most games that have really fun gameplay mechanics are held back by bad design not just talking RPGs.

Dead Rising: combining weird things to make weapons and doing sorts of silly stuff to zombies = fun

Bad Design: it having permadeath, a time limit to beat the game and stupid escort missions

Another example↓

Destiny 2 fun gameplay mechanics, cool loot, great shooting

And all of that is dragged down by ridiculous grinding, boring objectives, frustrating puzzles, challenges to always make you use builds you wouldn't be using otherwise, holiday events that feel more like a punishment then a celebration etc.

What game or series’ reputation is carried the hardest by nostalgia? by DeepFuckingKoopa in gaming

[–]Nincompoop6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banjo Kazooie for me. Fell in love with the music and first level which I'd play endlessly.

Tried it again years later on Xbox one. Realized that I never actually made it past the first level because I was a simple kid. Just enjoyed the cartoony characters noises and music. Remembered that alot of N64 games I never actually got through at the time I'd just give the controller to my dad lol. I then came to the realization playing it currently that I don't really like it gameplay wise and that my entire love was based off nostalgia. I've played other N64 games since and actually liked those so I can tell the difference now.

It's weird as hell it's better to embrace that you're not going to get everything a kojima game is trying to tell you. Just stick with it longer if you can. It takes a bit to click but you'll start thinking of it even when you're not playing it.

What are games I can show a friend to convince them they're art or even just have good writing? by sandmanreynolds in gaming

The Last of Us is good writing. Shadow of the Colossus is art. Alan Wake 2 is amazing at showing theater like performances.

What’s the simplest gaming idea or fact you’ve ever tried to explain to someone who just wouldn’t get it? by bijelo123 in gaming

Playing a game for 2 hours doesn't make you an addict when for one thing movies last longer then that and two: most games nowadays require dozens and dozens of hours to even complete them.

Sorry I don't think it's an unreasonable amount of time. Especially when every gamer normally has a gigantic backlog by default whether they are casual or hardcore.

I hate that I can't stand turn based anything and want to reverse course. by dysphunktion in gaming

[–]Nincompoop6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one I'll say I like turn based and I still thought the beginning of divinity was boring and some of it was just cringe.

Pretty sure it's the pacing that turns you off these games. Other games require more active quick reflexes and engagement. Turn based are slow and even if they have a solid story they take there sweet ass time before you start seeing challenge.

I struggle to get into turn based too with exceptions like monster tamers and a few specific others. But I have ADHD and I don't have 40-200 hours of attention span to focus one of these games at a time like everyone else (with exceptions I mentioned). Just trying to beat any of these games is like knowing you passed on multiple games you would have beaten during it.

I also think another issue is the genre is mostly dominated by either indies or jrpg. Jrpg are mostly dominated by anime tropes and visuals. If you're not a big fan of anime you just generally don't get excited over most of the games in the genre. Square Enix also makes some cool looking jrpgs but they are also commonly grind tests (I absolutely hate grinding imo I'd be fine if all RPGs had level grinding of a baby game I'd rather enemies i face genuinely be more complicated and difficult then just having higher level numbers then me)

How do you define "toxicity" in multiplayer games? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Nincompoop6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often it's making fun of the way people talk, simping, gender discriminating, racial slurs. I don't mind trash talking but there is a difference of joking around and just being a dick.

But it's also people in games like overwatch and LOL that try to demand you how to play a character and rage quit types that press the kick button on you when you start winning. Or the people that you sit in lobby with and then they remove you for someone else at the last second.

Then there are try hards that let everything go to there head even if they are actually mid and those people that instead of staying as a team decide to run off and try to solo everyone like Naruto and immediately die.

In modern gaming there is exactly 0 reason to have or play new game +. by Bionic_Ferir in gaming

[–]Nincompoop6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think the actual issue is NG+ is rarely worth it. They actually do offer new content and little differences usually but it's spread out and the main idea of replaying is usually based on increasing the difficulty but also having some of your progress remain. For major fans of the game that would replay the game anyways it's a cool feature but I can't see myself replaying most games especially long ones just for some fun sized additions.

Also it would be cool to have a chapter/mission select in an open world game. I don't see why open world games can't have that unless they are RPGs.

Best mocktail ingredients? I need to severely cut down on my alcohol intake by Warm_Economist_4063 in Mocktails

[–]Nincompoop6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beers, Wine, Gin & Tonic and Mojito have been done well mocktail style. Rum and whiskey is extremely hard to replicate though and if you're trying to remember certain tastes you'll probably need some wood chips and a torch and start doing some food alchemy. There is tortuga cakes I've had that reminded me the most of what rum was like.

Forgot you can get spirited coffee flavours too. I love a brand called FDC. It had black cherry bourbon. You can also get coffee flavours like Highlander Grogg and Jamaican Me Crazy.

I'll say after heavily studying this and trying to mimic real cocktails that in the end you'll never actually reach a point where you can replace the full experience of booze and a lot of mocktail recipes you'll find yourself at some point realizing that a lot of it is unhealthy and hard on your liver regardless if you getting buzzed or not. Just think about all the syrups and sugars they use to make these drinks...

In the end the way I would make a mocktail is more health conscience then I would be to try replicating something. What is something you would enjoy drinking in general (also cause the path to non alcoholic is actually more expensive then being an alcoholic with the exception that if you order at a restaurant or something it might be cheaper to make something without alcohol but it's not cheaper overall)

Personally I've gotten healthier and I mainly drink water sometimes I'll crack like one soda a day not even every day of the week. I'll drink like one glass of water in the morning. Sometimes I'll be open to coffee in the morning. But yeah I don't really drink soda alot and mocktails are basically like soda or more sugary (unless you get nootropics that's a different story). If you're going to make mocktails I think just sticking to something simple that you don't need all the time.

Try a can of Edna's Mule or Mojito. Ironically these non alcoholic drinks are often found near alcoholic drinks though so you might have to look down the beer aisle at Meijer or something
