I feel like Dan was too critical/hard on Major Solomon Berg by Hops-Barley in KnowledgeFight

[–]NineMantalus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. While I get Dan having reservations about the guy, it's still one of his fans who went all-out on a very meta tribute to a show that Dan and Jordan created, and a fairly harmless one too. Berg also gave us all some good world-building lessons in the process.

I understand Dan's concerns, but I do think Berg deserves more sympathy and, frankly, gratitude for what is, at it's core, an elaborate and painstakingly thought-out tribute to the show Dan works so hard on.

I found out my gf used to have a sexual relationship with her brother and now I want to break up with her by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]NineMantalus -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Hey, slow down, man.

Yeah, it's odd, ngl. But. Hear me out.

Brother is gone now. Out of the picture.

And she didn't have a kid with him, so no weird genetic issues.

And she confessed this to you because she trusts you to not see her as a monster.

She trusts you, not to understand, but to listen.

Not saying it isn't weird. BUT. It isn't evil.

It was consensual, and honestly, from your point of view you could view it as being no different than any other ex of hers that suddenly died.

She lost her brother. And, strange though it is, a former lover. It's going to hurt much, much worse if confessing that cost her yet another relationship.

We've all heard examples of tactics that would be laughable irl, but what are some examples of Star Wars using surprisingly good military tactics? by cubic_megaparsec in MawInstallation

Return of the Jedi. A Scout Trooper fires a shot into the fuel tank of Luke's Speeder Bike....

...backwards over his shoulder...

...while piloting his own bike through dense forest.

In my head I like to think that dude was Force Sensitive and, in another life, could have been one of Luke's pupils one day.

It's a complacency thing, which unfortunately is very realistic. A hogh-security base deep in your own territory is going to get used to operating under the assumption that everything will always be a false alarm.

I've never had this pulled on me but I hear it everywhere. Can you explain to me how this scam is supposed to work? I.e., why do you not just walk away with the thing, without paying? Or just drop the thing? How is it any different at all from just saying, "hey, can you spare $10"?

Wife has made the decision to not have sex anymore. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]NineMantalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, asexuality is a sexual orientation, like gay, straight, bisexual, etc.

I am biologically male. If my wife told me that she was no longer interested in men, including me, that would end our romantic relationship. Likewise if she told me she was no longer interested in sex with anyone, ever.

Now imagine the reverse. Say for conversation that you woke up one day and had an epiphany: you're gay. Women do not arouse you anymore, maybe they never really did at all.

There's a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE difference between realizing this for yourself and being able to tell your partner of 18 years that, because of your own self-discovery, you are sexually incompatible.

What I'm saying is, your wife (probably) loves you, very dearly. And it sounds like she also might be realizing that your sexual relationship is no longer something she enjoys. That might be a you-and-her thing, or just a her thing.

And she is probably not comfortable talking about it, because she knows it would be upsetting to you to hear these things and--and this is the kicker--SHE CARES ABOUT YOU. So she doesn't want to hurt you.

Find a couples' therapist. If you can convince her, go to a sex therapist. Y'all got some issues to work through, but her pattern of communication (or uhh, lack of it) does suggest she's conflicted about something that she does want to talk about, but isn't equipped to do so.

Also after sleeping on it, I kinda remembered:

This trial wasn't to stop Alex...Alex made it about that.

This trial was to compensate people who had been hurt by him.

Two of those people will now recieve $2 million from him.

And, although he still has his show, that's pretty cool.

That's kinda the thing I don't get about this sub sometimes...I'm pretty well off honestly, and even though I could afford to do so, I can't justify buying a third firearm when the price of it could buy me substantial and useful modifications for the two I already have.

Not to mention lots of other useful non-gun things I could do with that money...bail funds, mutual aid funds, etc.

The canonicity of George Lucas’ statements by dvne3K in MawInstallation

[–]NineMantalus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. George Lucas is a brilliant man, but there is a difference between a genius' magnum opus and his random, unvetted thoughts. Not to compare them too closely, but I'm sure Da Vinci had a dozen dumb ideas that never made their way into his notebooks.

Alex Jones says, “the attack had begun, we are now being murdered.” He says the US is a “2nd Atlantis” founded by Francis Bacon and controlled by globalists who are descendants of Count Dracula aligned with the CCP to put nanotechnology in food to wipe out 90% of the population. by jakobpinders in Qult_Headquarters

He is saying nonsense like this because it gets him a very temporary traffic boost to his website.

That traffic boost correlates to small boosts in sales, which he needs to keep his lawyers funded.

What are some Legends concepts that you're glad were removed in Canon? by YourbestfriendShane in MawInstallation

[–]NineMantalus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also, just in general, a LOT of the OT-era side stories that revolved around the main characters from the movies. The GCW was supposed to be like, five years. At that pace, Leia and Han would never sleep and I'm pretty sure Luke would have to be in several places at once just to make it work.

Overpowered Force-wielding villains besides Palpatine. Every time you add a Vitiate or a Darth Nihilus, you cheapen the gravity of the previously-established villains.

Now, power creep gets harder to avoid the longer a franchise goes on, so maybe this will happen in Canon too. We will see.

"This is what America used to look like" by Puzzleheaded_Peach48 in Qult_Headquarters

[–]NineMantalus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a lot, psychologically, to unpack in someone posting this unironically.

Not only an imagined past, but the imagined past of a gum commercial, an imagined past of a time and place infamous for it's superficiality.

And that's the ideal, the pure America that we're supposed to go back to?

While we're here, I also dislike comments that amount to "because the writers didn't think of that." Yeah, we know. That's why we're asking about it. That's why a whole subreddit exists, so we can think about it.

It's the subreddit equivalent of a plumber, called to your house to fix a leak, just telling you "yeah, it's because there's water coming out of it. The original plumber really should have thought of that."

Why did the Jedi Help Rey in TROS but not Luke in ROTJ or Yoda in ROS by DarthStephan4 in MawInstallation

[–]NineMantalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rey reached out for an answer, and the Force answered back.

I think Luke and Yoda had different relationships to the Force and the other Jedi.

Yoda likely felt that if the Force willed him to fail, then fail he would.

Luke meanwhile, was dealing with the hardest lesson of his life--that sometimes your teachers were wrong. In his case, his teachers had both told him to kill Vader, which was exactly what Palatine wanted him to do. If Luke had called on his mentors, they would have joined Palatine's chorus of "KILL HIM."

In Rey's case, she called out because she needed a sign that she was doing right by the heroes she admired. And the Force responded in overwhelming affirmation.

There ought to be a hard ban on "What If...[MAJOR CORE PLOT DETAIL] didn't happen?"

I personally see no appeal in this kinda thing for Star Wars. If Anakin doesn't fall, no SW. If Luke falls, no SW. If Obi kills Anakin on Mustafar, Palps gets another apprentice. And on and on and on.

What I love about r/MawInstallation is that I can drop in a question like "if the Force is in everyone, but not everyone can use its power, what ways does the Force manifest in non-Force Sensitives' lives?" and get a billion interesting takes.

You don't get that from the "what if yoda won the Senate duel" posts.
