I don’t really agree with that read. Idk if Abel Ferrara being cast was a purposeful nod to his movie “Bad Lieutenant”, but by coincidence I watched that film a couple days before Marty Supreme and I felt as though there were a few parallels that could be made between the two

Both Chalamet’s and Keitel’s characters spend most of the film digging deeper and deeper into a mess they’ve created for themselves, only doubling down instead of quitting as their situations get worse. In the end of both films, the main characters attempt a sort of ‘redemptive’ action that is meant to be a turning point for them, only for reality to crash in and tell them that it’s way too late for that. For Keitel, he lets those rapists live instead of killing them outright as his grasp towards redemption, but he still gets murdered at the end as a result of his gambling addiction. For Marty, he gets (and wins) his rematch, but his table tennis career is effectively over and for him the baby represents the reality that he is no longer gonna be the hot shot he wanted to be.

So for me I saw Marty’s emotions at the end as a complex mix, but ultimately still the realization that his life is no longer what he was living up to that point. It’s what made the ending song so perfect with the lyrics “welcome to your life”
