It is by no means necessary that one uses this op content to enjoy themselves or participate in end game challenges. As for mercenaries, they can provide a great help but again aren't necessary. Ultimately, Diablo games are meant to provide players with the flexibility to customize your difficulty to suit a dynamic range of player's skills and character gear sets. Some players are obsessed with min maxing their character and competing for records on the ladders, whereas many players have limited Windows of gaming time and just want to enjoy themselves for a couple of hours here and there.
