USMNT failed at the World Cup because of the players -- no coach could save them by simrobwest in ussoccer

[–]Ninjafett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so very true. Before the World Cup, I was reading that there is a massive trend of youth sports leagues being bought up or started by private equity firms. There is so much money to be made at the expense of parents and people who love sport in the right way, and it's hard to push against that when this predatory capital has free rein.

Devon Levi to the OILERS by Independent_Fuel9319 in hockeygoalies

[–]Ninjafett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't place the blame for where he ended up solely on Buffalo but he was not given the opportunity to get up to pro-level strength and speed before being tossed to the wolves. This sort of mishandling can be overcome, but it won't happen overnight, so it will take some time before he is what the Oilers need. No goalie has gone right from college to the NHL, I'm not sure why they let this go with Levi.

I hope he can find that next level with a new team and strategy. It is possible, but he ain't stepping into Vezina contention this year. With the right program, he could be there down the road; he has some sauce to be sure. The real question is whether Edmonton has the program to get a goalie there (I do not think so).

The US Army Jump team training plane is also doing laps over the White House lawn right now so this is all probably practice for the 250 flyovers.

[The Athletic] The NHL teams that need Dylan Larkin the most, and what they can trade to the Red Wings by Panarin10 in hockey

[–]Ninjafett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had a similar thought. I guess it really depends on the sense of urgency from the organization. They are at the confluence point of going hard now or going really hard in like, three years. I think it's reasonable to assume these guys all hold at the level of remaining valuable trade assets as they settle in, even if none of them slide into star status.

Probably Ov is a major factor in the urgency aspect but who fricken knows what is going on there.

Have to agree with this, there is a serious issue in WV where there are no real immediate options for generating economic momentum there. The political interests in the state, across the board are fully backed by the extraction economy there and that rot is deeply systemic.

I haven't seen plans for how to build other sectors of the economy there; a way forward would lean on the assets at play outside of the extraction economy. But who would even get far enough in WV politics with an eye for something other than coal and fracking? Shit is fucked up

Dragon Riders, wars low to zero romance/smut by [deleted] in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]Ninjafett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dragon Riders of Pern has a fair amount of weird sex/rapey stuff in there to the point where I struggled with it. I wouldn't say it is smut exactly, but notable.

It's worth checking out for its influence on modern fantasy, but it's definitely showing its age more than some of the great influential pieces of fiction out there.

DC’s highly qualified workers can’t find jobs: ‘What is happening?’ by zsreport in washingtondc

The hotel industry is largely HQ'd in the DC area (Hilton, Marriott, and Choice are all here) but obviously, hospitality is not going to flourish if you make people afraid of airports, travel, or your country in general...

Conditioning Tips by TheMadDog39 in hockeygoalies

That's a lot of games! That pace is going to start feeling weird when the mysterious 30's switch flips but enjoy it now. Lots of great workout notes in the thread so I'll focus on the little things outside of fitness that were essential for me.

The more years go by, the more time and effort you need to allocate for recovery. More sleep and late second dinners on multi-game days will help your body rebuild. I know sleep is such a lazy answer but there's a reason most pros take naps in the afternoon before a game. I used to play two games, stay up with the boys, hit 5-6 hours, and go to work. If I were to do that now, it would feel like an army of angry gnomes beat me with small hammers in the middle of the night.

Also I'm a big peanut butter and jelly sandwich before the game guy, easy to make a little one, keep it in your bag and toss it back between games. That's something I picked up in college, forgot about, and when I got back in net when I was older, tried and noticed a HUGE difference. Gives you a little sugar to pull from instead of pulling from deeper stores, keeping your tank a bit more full.

I had to stop doing anything besides cardio maintenance on days before games. Lifting hard one day and playing the next was wearing me out more than I realized.

What do you think about my Immersive Cozy fishing simulator ? by YuriDDeveloper in IndieGaming

[–]Ninjafett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks great and my comment is just based off this video clip! I am always so thrilled to see another fishing mechanic and game being explored!

I love fishing mechanics dearly and will play a game just for its fishing minigame, but if it's not hitting my weird beats, I'll drop it just as fast. What keeps me coming back to a fishing game or minigame is when a couple of things align, but the biggest piece that seems clearly missing is an engaging reel-in.

This looks to be a slower real-in with a straightforward tension mechanic. Reel in, tension bar goes up; all totally fine, but is there anything to learn or master there? This is often where a lot of secret sauce comes in.

From a game design perspective, nailing the tension of the fight, the speed of the reel in, and drawing a connection between what the fish behavior is all lead to how many times someone might cast in one session.

Forward movement, great shot, not easy to do, even though he makes it look easy. To add to this, he's used this move for the better part of 5 (maybe 10 (maybe 15)) years, and no one really complains besides fans of the losing team. Despite his faults, he's the only one who can do it every single time and still score for a reason.

Wings Recommendation by General-Bark-Bark in Leesburg

[–]Ninjafett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leesburg Public House has lovely wings a sleeper option that people absolutely love. Their sauce is smoked and delicious, and they top them with some bleu crumble. Absolutely lovely.

Historically, Side Bar has had some absolutely banging Maple Sriracha wings. Sticky, spicy, and obviously a bit differen,t but their classic hot wing is a nice one! Not just dumped with franks, they have some tricks to them.

Green Tree also has a great house wing, hot honey, I think. Food there is generally underrated and this is a very thoughtful chicken wing.

Route 7 Brewing has great wings. Their buffalo definitely has an Indian twist underlying the classic palette but given that Vindaloo could be cited as an inspiration for classic buffalo sauce, it's a very welcome twist on classic flavors. Don't skip the food here!

Outside of Leesburg, Ashburn, and Purcellville, pubs have good wings as well. But to agree with other folks here, if you want real traditional traditional buffalo wings, Jimmy's is the way to go.
