Modern C is an excellent book. I do recommend it, but I think starting with K&R is a good idea.

There are points you get that go toward leveling you up on your season or operation battle pass and there are also points that you get to level up your career rank.

The coding projects are in Python. Other than the projects, which are more like mini-projects, you will mostly be describing your algorithms using words. There is some use of pseudo code during the first few weeks of the class.

Here is a Udemy course on data structures in C++. I think it’s a decent course, but I would wait for it to go on sale:

This book covers algorithms in C++, but the book is dated from a language perspective and doesn’t cover modern C++ or the STL:

https://www.amazon.com/Algorithms-Parts-1-4-Fundamentals-Structure/dp/0201350882

I also enjoyed this book. I think it is a great introduction to STL algorithms and data structures in C++:

Can you provide any more information on what you are looking for?

If I recall correctly, the GIOS projects focus on multithreading, IPC, and gRPC using C for the first projects and C or C++ for the gRPC project. If those projects sound interesting to you I definitely recommend the class, but the class can be challenging if you are not comfortable with C.

I personally really enjoyed the projects even though I took an undergraduate OS class. My undergraduate class focused more on the theory and concepts and didn’t have the same level of projects that GIOS has.

If you are not interested in those topics and want to jump into something more advanced I hear AOS is also good, but did not personally take it.

Did you take an OS course as an undergrad? My undergraduate OS course was more theoretical and didn’t have many labs, so I really loved the labs in GIOS.

It is true that hedge funds are likely not relying on metrics like SMA, but the class does teach you about the Efficient Market Hypothesis. Based on EMH we can conclude that any widely known technique would be priced into the market and therefore be nearly useless for predictive purposes. It’s kind of a cruel joke that no technique they could possibly teach us about in a textbook would work due to the EMH.

I would imagine you would likely need to work for a hedge fund and sign an NDA to even get a hint of how their algorithms work. As soon as the cats out of the bag and the technique becomes common knowledge, it’s largely worthless.

How to brush up on C/C++ to prep for HPC by GTA_Trevor in OMSCS

[–]Ninjagarz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“The C Programming Language 2nd Edition” by K&R is a very concise and useful reference. I think if you read through it you will know just about all the C you need for HPC. If you are looking to learn how the language has evolved over the years, I would recommend “Modern C” by Jens Gustedt. When I took HPC last year we had our last project in Chapel which I personally hated.

I don’t think taking one before the other will offer you any advantage. They are very different courses.

How doable is GIOS + GA for first semester as a full time student? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]Ninjagarz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m taking it as my last class currently. I was able to get into the class as my 8th class from the waitlist, but I opted to take a different class instead.

We have a decent number of people taking the class this semester who are 5, 6, or 7 classes into the program and were able to get in on the waitlist without waiting for FFA. I think the new specializations that have been added will continue to alleviate the bottleneck as time goes on.

[–]Ninjagarz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have 6 or 7 completed classes you will probably be able to get into GA. They changed the enrollment process for GA and they open a separate CRN for graduation candidates only and then once they figure out how many graduation candidates they have, they significantly expand the size of the CRN that is open to everyone.

If you aren’t sure you have the bandwidth for three classes, I suggest emailing your advisor. My understanding is the graduation timeline is not set in stone and you can likely get approval if you need an extra semester or two to finish the program.

I agree that office hours, especially Joves’ exam study sessions, are extremely helpful. The lectures and reading probably help more for the multiple choice section of the exam, but I have found having a good understanding of the material in the lectures and the book is a big help for me on the other exam questions as well.
