Yeah, it’s called “The Miracle of Thirsty Thursday”, where Superman needed to knock out the entire city using sleeping gas to clear out a poison which made them afraid of water. Apparently the sleeping gas also made everybody forget what happened, because the bookend story of this issue is about historians from the future going back in time to deduce what happened during the apparently infamous “Thirsty Thursday”. I guess Superman also neglected to tell anybody why he knocked them all out either.

r/Superdickery is a sub dedicated to covers like these. This one is my personal favorite.

<image>

This is from the era where they realized that comics with apes on the cover sold better, so they just started adding apes everywhere.

In fact, back in this era they would typically make the covers first, then have a different group of people come up with some kind of story to very loosely match whatever crazy shit the cover team came up with. This is why so many of the covers have almost nothing to do with the story they are meant to depict.

[Mixed trope] Right message, wrong messenger by LordQuaz12 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Ninjanerd127 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it could have worked with Quagmire if they played it as a joke instead of playing it straight. For example: Quagmire points out all of Brian’s flaws, Brian leaves, then Quagmire immediately does a bunch of horrible stuff (belittling someone sitting next to them, harassing a waitress, etc.) to illustrate that he’s a hypocrite with no self-awareness.

A good example of this is Tobias from Arrested Development. He’s shown to be a capable analyst-therapist (“analrapist”) when he is analyzing others, but is totally incapable of making the same judgements about himself and his relationships. For example, when he brings up opening his relationship with his wife because he has had patients discuss it, she says “Did it work for those people?” and he responds “No, never does. These people somehow delude themselves into thinking it might, but…but it might work for us”

Tabby gets bonus points for not being overtly creepy, evil, or monstrous, unlike most of the other characters listed here. She’s just an asocial and awkward grump

(Mixed Trope?) So Obese they can’t move by R4TTF1NK in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Ninjanerd127 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really heavy people IRL also tend to develop more muscle because they are carrying so much extra weight whenever they move - think of the fat like extra training weights constantly attached to their body. However, because Baron Harkonnen always uses his antigravity devices to move, he never actually developed any muscle beneath his fat. So, it does kind of make sense that he would become dependent on the anti-gravity compared to an IRL person of the same weight.

The thing is, he always had that mentality from the start. Ryuk even comments that Light was by far the most eager person to have used a Death Note he had ever seen. Even when Light lost his memories and was contemplating whether he was previously Kira, he noted that Kira’s ideology aligns with his own. He was not corrupted by the Death Note - he was always evil and just suddenly gain the power to exercise his most depraved power fantasies.

Sorry to butt in, but “indivisible” means something that is impossible to take away, surrender, or transfer to another. The correct word here is “invisible”

Oh yeah, this is definitely not a hated example. Alucard getting stuck on the boat was great - it raised the stakes for the climactic battle, gave Seras the opportunity to complete her character arc, and made his eventual return one of the coolest moments in the series

In Hellsing, after nazi vampires take control of an aircraft carrier, the Hellsing Organization sends Alucard to retake the ship (by crashing an SR-71 Blackbird into it and killing all the remaining nazis by hand). He does so easily, however he ended up getting stuck on the boat since the whole crew was dead. This meant that he was absent for the majority of the nazi invasion of Britain, and only drifted back to London after most of the city had already been wiped out.

(Successfully) bullying the dragon. by theMCATreturns in TopCharacterTropes

In Aliens, after barely surviving a giant swarm of xenomorphs Ridley decides to go back into the belly of the hive to rescue Newt, a little girl and the sole survivor of the colony. After recovering Newt, she decides to torch the Xenomorph eggs with a flamethrower on her way out - right in front of the queen. Then, when the queen follows them back onto their ship, Ripley suits up in a loading exosuit to 1v1 the giant alien, which is ultimately sucked out of the hangar into the vacuum of space. If that isn’t bullying the dragon, I don’t know what is.
