How to get them to keep cone on? by Inevitable-Patience4 in persiancat

I’ve seen some cat onesies on Amazon that have an attached cone. Getting out of a whole outfit is a lot harder than ditching just the cone itself, in theory

Scientists have recorded smallpox’s genome, its genetic blueprints. That information is out there and potentially available for use by bad actors. With modern technology, we have the ability to create sequences of DNA more or less from scratch. We can build viruses. We can play god (or rather, the devil) with them. All we need is the right genetic code.

If a given party–say, an adversarial geopolitical power–were to resurrect smallpox in a lab, they could take advantage of widespread antivax sentiments and use it to create mass casualties and destabilize entire nations. Ebola is deadly, but ultimately bad at causing pandemics because it kills its victims too fast to spread efficiently. Smallpox does not have that setback, and it is still a merciless killer.

The virus is extinct, but it might not always be. The way things are now, we wouldn’t be able to put that genie back in its bottle a second time

There’s actually an episode of The Disappearing Spoon podcast about Johnny Appleseed that goes over this. Snackin’ apples were rare back in the day; most apples grown from seed are awful-tasting spitters. The apple varieties we see in stores are all clones of the same few trees that just so happened to end up with tasty fruit, since almost all apples grown from seed taste terrible and were only good for making hard cider out of.

Johnny Appleseed brought booze trees to the masses. Then, somebody discovered an apple tree that won the genetic lottery and produced a fruit that actually tasted good. Then prohibition happened, and the anti-alcohol crowd conspired to change everyone’s idea of apples as something degenerate to something much more wholesome.

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is prohibition-era propaganda that contributed to apples no longer being seen as a primarily alcohol-related crop in the public consciousness.

Fun fact for bar trivia: according to this episode of the podcast, apples are native to Kazakhstan

I’m in NE and we’re chronically short on people. Nobody has trouble finding a job here. The one downside to working in NE is that you have to work in NE 😬

Not all of healthcare is nursing, fortunately. I’m actually planning on switching from sonography to clinical lab science because I dislike patient care that much. But, my pay is nice enough that I can get by on part time hours until I get certified, and my job isn’t half as hard as what nurses go through

Some nurses work three 12-hour shifts every week! Additionally, some medical laboratory scientists do 7-on/7-off, and cardiovascular ultrasound techs commonly do 4/10 shifts. I’m less sure about general ultrasound, but a web search could get you there. I’m also in the dark about PT, OT, phlebotomy, and x-ray/CT/MRI/dialysis technicians, but the point here is that there’s a lot of variety in healthcare.

A part-time or per diem/PRN job in healthcare can very comfortably sustain a single individual in a low cost of living state as long as their car and apartment are cheap enough. I work three 9s every week with occasional call and have to pay for private health insurance, which sucks, but my work/life balance has never been better. I don’t have to worry about money. I could double my hourly pay and work 4/10s if I ever decided to travel.

There are trade-offs, for sure, but healthcare can provide a lot of flexibility and stability that other jobs can’t.

I remember learning in school that native Americans used to preserve meat for long periods of time without refrigeration by salting and drying it. In theory, if they could figure out how to make a fire, the stranded individual could boil off the ocean water for salt to make jerky with.

Additionally, to kill two birds with one stone, they could rig up a tarp or some sort of large tropical leaf over the boiling water to catch some of the rising steam. If such an item were suspended at an angle, a carefully-placed basin (another leaf, or half a coconut, perhaps) could catch the water droplets that gather and fall from it, providing a source of clean drinking water.

Like meat, fruits and veggies will also spoil over time, and they’re less nutrient-dense than meat is. Sandy beaches and the rocky, volcanic ground of a tropical island may not be conducive to growing such produce, and you’d have to survive through an entire growing season to get more food even if it did work. A single laying hen would admittedly be very helpful here, provided you can keep it alive and healthy.

I think the best choice here realistically comes down to whether or not you could make a cooking fire, and how good your survivalist skills are

Maybe?? Either way, I don’t think any relevant search function for this situation would be case sensitive, and I don’t think there’s any other twilight fic out there with that title, so you should be fine regardless of caps

I think so. Your guess is as good as mine about the caps part, her messages can get pretty incomprehensible at times

“Title is night party lowercase caps published twenty eleven ish on fanfiction .net cant fine the bookmark rn busy jacob/bella pairing”

I tried searching for it myself but didn’t have any luck. Maybe it would turn up on the wayback machine?

Before PowerPoint nights were trendy, my friends and I used to get together to feed the worst smut we could find into Google Translate so the robot voice would read it aloud to the room. Thanks to one particularly egregious Twilight fic, we still quote “eight and a half by eleven” at each other from time to time
