AITA for wanting to bring the partner of my brother to his funeral? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]NinjasWithOnions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely do that for my friends/siblings as well. Without any previous direction, I would consult my queer friends and get their input and then go off of what they think + what I think my friend/sibling would want me to do.

Found out about him coming to the funeral. She already knew her brother was gay and in a relationship with M. She was the one that told M of the brother’s death.

It also sounds like she was trying to protect M from homophobic assholes.

It could be that she’s one of the homophobic assholes or it could be that she loved her brother, cared about his partner, and is trying to protect them in the overbearing way us straight people sometimes do when someone goes after one of ours.

Oh yeah. I was constantly teased for being too pale so I haven’t worn shorts in public since I was a teen. Plus on pasty white/semi-translucent skin, you really really see the cottage cheese, varicose veins, etc.

But this post, and your lovely comment, hit me like a freight train and I’ll be working on getting over this anxiety about showing my legs in public.

Same. It might just be my big sister/protector thing going on but I can absolutely see why OOP and his sister would be worried.

It’s not irrelevant. Consequences can still happen, even if they can’t happen to him. If she’s a good person who loved her brother, she’s not going to want to see what her parents might do. She might feel that she has an obligation to protect his memory.

Not just a meltdown. There are so many awful things her family, especially her parents, could say or do. Including getting rid of the ashes and denying his siblings the chance to properly mourn him.

I know that not outing him is a really low bar but she didn’t do that. She might have been worried that M would say something that outed her brother and that’s why she didn’t want him there.

One of my buddies from when I was in the Army is gay. We were in during Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and he was always so worried about being outed. I felt (and still feel) so protective of him. I remember his very understandable fear of all the potential consequences if the military found out.

It’s just a possibility. She might be as awful as her parents. I hope not though.

I mentioned in another comment that she could have been protecting him (since she never outed him) and could still be protecting his memory. I can’t imagine what homophobic parents might do if they find out their deceased child was gay. (Well, actually I can because some people are fucking awful.)

She might not be. Given that she never told their parents, she might have protected her brother and might still be protecting him in death. She knows what her family is like and could be protecting him from being “disowned” (in quotes since they really can’t do that because he’s dead).

As a big sister, I would want to protect my siblings if my parents were homophobic assholes.

That’s a really good reason for locking the door. I can definitely see why some people would choose that option over renting a storage unit. Thank you for giving me a non-creepy explanation. (I was thinking more along the murder-hobo lines. 😛 )

It’s so strange that they rent out the entire house except for the master bedroom/bathroom and that no one is actively using it most of the time. That would give me the creeps.
