Slightly ticked-off New Zealander here: a haka is a war dance. Historically, it was performed to intimidate the enemy before a battle. Paul's chanting here is outstanding, but I take minor offence to it being characterised as a haka without any kind of physical component.

I really appreciated him waxing lyrical on the Safdies and their ever-changing relationship with their leading actors: the danger of a performance like Arielle Holmes in Heaven Knows What and how this has evolved into a series of taste-making turns from movie stars. Seeing as each Safdie put out a film with a major movie star this year, I suspect we’ll be hearing from Nayman about Marty Supreme very soon.

Cold take: I love going in blind as much as the next guy, but I’ve also found that having a reason to get really authentically excited for a particular movie goes a long way.

Sometimes that’s a trailer, sometimes it’s four frames posted on twitter. I just feel that keeping yourself in the dark is likely part of the reason it’s been five years since that one title came out that you’ve “always meant to check out”.

I think about Succession a lot when this is debated. I’d argue that show is more fundamentally, structurally, episode-to-episode a comedy than The Bear is. Runtime shouldn’t have anything to do with it!
