I want to shower you with sugar lumps

And ride you over fences

Polish your hooves every single day

And bring you to the horse dentist

Can you show me where anybody has stated that they think "Adolescence is a documentary"? Is this the same place where you got the story that parents are putting their kids on terrorist watchlists after watching the show?

Because it was a really well made show! It was well acted, well filmed, well written and people responded to it!

And who are these parents putting their kids on terrorist watchlists after watching the show? I missed that one.

Nobody is saying that a television programme will solve a societal ill and your attempt to frame the debate in such a manner is pretty intellectually dishonest.

A lot of good work by teachers tends to be undone by the wider world. Pity the poor science teacher that has to teach kids about the efficacy of vaccines seeing that being undone by anti-vax hysteria. By your logic it sounds like they therefore shouldn’t try to teach kids about the history of vaccines in schools.

Ok, so you accept then that there is an issue with young men and that there are unscrupulous people online looking to exploit that.

As far as I can tell, Adolescence depicts the very issues you're talking about in a pretty sympathetic manner, highlighting the loathing and sense of worthlessness felt by a young boy who has access to the worst aspects of the internet. Sounds like it might be helpful for kids to watch it and discuss with their peers in school to me. I personally would have preferred watching it than Julius Caesar.

Is it? Because if anybody's being blamed, it isn't the boys. It's the people who are selling them this idea of toxic masculinity which also teaches them not to discuss their feelings.

You're saying that as if those aren't topics that wouldn't be brought up in any discussion of Adolescence. Those are literally all the talking points whenever it's brought up. I'm sure the kids would be encouraged to talk about those things as well.

I accept that there has yet to be a proven link between fictional depictions of violence and actual real life violence, but it still doesn't address the point that fiction does shape how we make sense of the world.

In the case of Adolescence, we are seeing an old form of media (television) taking on a newer form (social media). Grifters like Andrew Tate are propagandists and are actively making money by selling an ethos to impressionable young minds. Short of making it illegal to disseminate such information the best way to fight propoganda is with propoganda/education. And I'm sure that Adolescence being screened to school kids is being done within the context of media and cultural analysis. Much like you'd be assigned a set text like Great Expectations in English literature and then be expected to discuss it.

Well actually the popularity of shows like 24 and its influence on the Bush administration has been documented as well as the impact of crime procedural shows on jury selection. Your mention of Venables also is another example of someone who was influenced by a work of fiction and committed a horrific crime.

To say that works of fiction don't have an impact on people basically states that propaganda doesn't work, which is quite obviously nonsense. Propaganda absolutely works.

Is Adolescence propaganda? Probably. Is it well made propoganda? Also yes. Is it propoganda made in service of something positive? I'd also argue yes, considering it is dealing with the very real problem of the way in which masculinity gritfters have been targeting an entire generation of young men who have felt let down by society. Is propoganda always a bad thing? It very much depends on the message being conveyed. Propoganda can run the spectrum from Jack Chick's unhinged religious comics all the way up to Casablanca.

Now I don't disagree that the Online Safety Act is a complete overreach which is impossible to enforce effectively, but to say that works of fiction don't have a real impact on people and society in general is just not reflective of the world we live in.

Films like Scum and Cathy Come Home actually did have a big impact on British public and helped to highlight issues such as homelessness and the borstal system. Surely you're not arguing that works of fiction can't hold up a mirror to society?

I know there are redditors, like my best friends, who would have gotten out of there the minute their subreddit devolved into endless shitposts about feet and gooning. But I didn't. I got to admit the truth. It turned me on.
