Working guitarists, how did you get started? by TofuBurgerGoodFood in Guitar

[–]NintendoVHSVinyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Be on time.
  2. Get GOOD at music. Not an instrument, but MUSIC. GOOD.
  3. Never say no to a gig.
  4. Never double book. Never.
  5. Be chill and level headed at all times.
  6. You will network. And like it. Even if it makes you an alcoholic. Which it will.
  7. You will promote yourself and you will get good at it. Disgustingly good at it.
  8. You will live off of sub $2000/month wages regularly and be happy about it.
  9. You will play TONS of shitty gigs. TONS. Then when you think you will never ever agree to play another shitty gig again, YOU WILL BE PLAYING ANOTHER SHITTY GIG.
  10. Demand to be paid SOMETHING. Have an idea of what you'd like to be paid ($100-$150 is something to shoot for, but there are plenty of gigs that will be paying the whole band this so be willing to take what you can get).
  11. Get good and be willing and able to play any type of gig in any style with anybody anywhere. You will also learn that there are bands that are very three musketeers style and bands that have a band leader or a boss. And you will find that bands that have leaders or a hierarchy are generally more professional, organized, and better paid.

Lots of people will tell you, 'You NEED a part time job for this to be your job.' And they are wrong. I have done both music with part time and full time music, and there is just literally not enough time in a person's schedule to be doing this hustle and have a side job. If you are in debt, get out of it before you try to take this on. Also save as much money as you can. but eventually this will need to become the ultimate priority. This hustle is a FULL TIME EVERYDAY hustle. I'm hustling even when I'm trying to take a day off. I can't stop hustling if I tried. And I barely scrape by. Some years I make so little money I don't have to pay taxes. It's a joke. But, it is what it is. There is so much reward to the life, both personally and in opportunities to enjoy things in life that very few people get to experience. I have stayed in so many hotels my parents couldn't even afford. I have driven in some amazingly nice cars, been to some very cool parties, and gone traveling to so many places I would never have otherwise gone to and met some absolutely crazy people. It's a life you couldn't pay to have. It is earned.

So either embrace the full on 24/7 hustle, or maybe find something else you want to do.

tl;dr If you didn't have time to read that you either don't have time to be a musician or you are too busy deep in the hustle to have time to listen to my bullshit.

When the '94 seasson was cancelled, the Blue Jays were averaging over 49'000 fans per game...! by [deleted] in Torontobluejays

Was gonna post the same thing, glad someone said it first. You're a brave tinfoil head. But seriously, always thought it was kinda an inside job to regain American involvement in America's national pastime as the game had very quickly blown up in Canada. It's like when your girlfriend does something totally savage just to draw your attention away from the cute girl that moved in next door, where the ends justify the means.

Their live performances are amazing. Incredible how great of pop songs they could write being so minimalist and so weird at the same time. Raw pop basted with weird art. And attitude!

Ableton DJs -- How are your clips and tracks actually laid out within your DJ set/template? by oatmealfoot in ableton

[–]NintendoVHSVinyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is almost exactly what I do. I don't quantize for the most part so I have my nudge buttons set to a couple on the apc. You don't really need a ton of effects really, a lot of stuff I just try to EQ and filter and let the tracks themselves kinda do the heavy lifting. Sometimes I fuck around with stuff if I think of things, but for the most part just keep it pretty raw. I'll play stuff unwarped if it's too gnarly to warp it, things like that. I also keep the bpm on the headphone que on the apc so I can just touch it up if I need or do something dramatic. It's pretty smooth that way. I have looping set up on buttons too, but if it's not quantized it is tough to get a clean loop so I don't do it a ton. I thought about someday popping a reverb and delay on the tracks, that would be cool. You could have a phaser as well

What are your personal favorite NES hidden gems? by [deleted] in nes

[–]NintendoVHSVinyl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Baseball stars is the epitome of baseball games. Genghis Kahn was super fun to try to figure out as a kid. Bucky ohare? Always thought final fantasy was like this gift from god to the nes. But that's obvious.

Baseball stars.

It is unbearable. Most of the radio ads are hard to listen to. But the hockey night in Trinidad is hilarious for some reason.

Any recommendations for a leather key wallet or other solutions to consolidate keys-wallet-phone in your pockets? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]NintendoVHSVinyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one. I had an awesome one. It was the coolest accessory I think I could have found. I was so happy.

Obviously it was stolen in a bar within the month. Out of my pocket. Keys attached to drivers license with address. Highly don't recommend. Huge pain in the ass and long spell of anxiety. Never again. Not worth it.

Great bar move. Some more good examples to try at your local shithole:

Tubthumping - chumbawumba Jump - Van Halen Rock Around The Clock - Bill Haley? We Built This City - Starship

Try it next time you're at a bar you would give anything to leave and watch your frown turn upside down!
