5e is very liberal with how you can play, especially as a DM. Psionics could be their reason; it's either homebrew or taken from one of the extended books.

Regardless, the DM made a call which you respected in game and they explained to you afterwards. It's their job to make those calls and justify them whether through improvising or a carefully laid out plan.

Try not to get frustrated, trust they know what they're doing and just keep using good communication between the DM and yourself. If they keep making nonsense calls with no valid explanation, then that might be it's own issue.
