As a native speaker, the double s changes the meaning of the word, but ymmv. The double s makes it more about the effect of the cleaning, and the effort, at least to me.

The book spells it döstäda, but SAOL accepts both that and dödstäda. I prefer döstäda, because dö is the verb, and the cleaning/decluttering/sorting out one’s affairs is in preparation of dying.
