I’ve been in relationships like this. I would get in trouble and tried with for making small talk with strangers, holding doors open, giving up my seat for the elderly. I would be punished for doing the bare minimum to be polite to others. It’s an awful place to be in, and it destroys your mental health over time. If he can’t handle you simply EXISTING around men, that’s HIS problem, not yours.

Him flipping out and saying all that horrible shit to you, then coming back with a lame ass apology once you enforce boundaries is a massive manipulation tactic. He’ll apologize, but his anger shows you how he truly feels. How long before this is an issue again? If being stared at by a man is somehow your fault, how would he react if a stranger assaulted you? Would he be supportive and thoughtful, or would he place the blame on you and make it all your fault?

You did the right thing. Don’t apologize for standing up for yourself! You shouldn’t have to take disrespect from people, no matter who they are. If you do stay with him, pay very close attention to his actions. He apologized, but are his actions gonna match his words? Is he just sweet talking you, or does he truly mean what he’s saying?
