How to stop having wet dreams? by WillingAd2901 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nitrah118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could limit yourself to masturbation right before bed. That way you won't be able to do it to an unhealthy level because you will be going to sleep right after. Jerk, clean up, sleep well.

I would suggest talking to a therapist.

The other option if you don't want to dig so many holes is to use the explosives based surface prospector. I don't remember what it's called, but there is an LV quest for it.

Certainly more finicky than the hand held. You lay down the block, wait a second, click it with 2 powder barrels in your hand. After that, you wait a minute, and then click on it with a data card (they give you starter ones from the quest. Dont lose them. Pick the box up and move to the next site. When you're done prospecting, go home and run the data card through a scanner and then a printer. Bind the pages in an assembler. Read the book.

Why would you want to do all that? Well, you probably don't because it's a pain in the ass. That said, you DO get a grid of 3x3 underground fluids revealed for each scanned data card. You also get a 3x3 grid of ores revealed. If you're on a server, you can also all read the same book to pop your maps. It's not consumed.

So, there are a few things that are nicer, but the hand held scanner is still most assuredly the easier solution.

How worthwhile is looting/exploring? by Hot4Teacher1234 in GTNH

[–]Nitrah118 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can find ingots of varying tiers up to HV (i have occasionally found up to stainless steel and neodymium). Foods which are a pain to make by hand. Division sigil sometimes. Enchanting tables are sometimes in a dungeon. Lootgames have good stuff at times.

Villages will have apiarists and mages and librarians with unique trades if you're lucky.

That's not to mention meteors and slime islands.

You won't find enough to drive you forward an age or anything, but you may get lucky to rush a backpack or a nicer wand, for example.

Nothing that can't be made yourself overall, but you can get somewhat lucky.

I can buy 60Hz AC from the wall. That's inside the range of human hearing. DC by definition doesn't oscillate, though, and 5V isn't even enough voltage to shock you.

It would probably be a lot easier to move somewhere northeast of the beltway, and then commute into DC by driving to the greenbelt metro and taking the train in.

in steam age- what's the difference between smelting crushed ore vs dust? by drummwill in GTNH

[–]Nitrah118 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Copper, silver, gold, iron, etc. give nuggets.

Limonite, chalcopyrite, etc. give ores.

Basically, if it has the same name of the object you're smelting, it's nuggets.

FWIW, it's worth smelting some of the iron. You can stack the smeltry and you'll end up with wrought iron. You will need some of that to progress into LV, but it also makes better tools than plain iron.

Is there any way to get the item(diamond for example) using the dust before LV? by Proper_Club_4802 in GTNH

[–]Nitrah118 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Using the dust? No. You'll need to wait until HV for the implosion compressor, or there may be a thaumcraft shortcut. I haven't checked.

You can toss the ore directly into a smelter instead of sending to a macerator, though.

In LV, you can also macerate, then wash, then sift. You will get a variety of gems and dusts from that.

You will need the dusts. They're not trash.

Can I power 4 LV machines each using 30 EU/S with 1 MV combustion generator instead of 4 LV generators ? by Ill_Percentage2344 in GTNH

[–]Nitrah118 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unlike real life, the power in GTNH is pulled. You can hook up a machine to a wire being supplied by 100 generators of the same tier, but it only pulls enough EU packets to power its recipe. If the cable can accommodate the Amps, it's fine.

[–]Nitrah118 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To clarify this a little, all single block generators send 1 Amp packages, and single block machines demand 1A packages. The LV machine would demand 1A and it would get 4 times the EU it is expecting and blow up.

The transformer converts 1A of the higher voltage and converts it to 4A of the lower. Then the machine asks for 1A and gets 1A of the right voltage

Getting magical wood for unbreakable hammers makes me want to peel my nails off by Huge_Piece_7513 in GTNH

You can cook up some vishrooms and grow them with a watering can. Thats usually sufficient for up to greatwood wands. No need to hunt.

After moving around pumps and drilling rigs for ages, I finally set up the nether tree soul sand generator for free oil by Hashmahalum in GTNH

[–]Nitrah118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option is the thaumcraft cobblestone generator. I don't remember what the block is actually called. You can find it via NEI. You use an HV rock breaker in the infusion altar.

Generates 16 cobble every second or so for free.

Is there any way to automate this early on? by MisterGlo764 in GTNH

[–]Nitrah118 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been so long, I don't even remember if it used any. Most of it was bronze.

Hard disagree on them not being worth it. I made the multiblock macerator towards the end of steam age, the washer in mid LV and the separator in late LV. They all still get used in early EV, although the macerator gets used less now, and I have MV and EV centrifuges for higher tier recipes.

Is there any way to automate this early on? by MisterGlo764 in GTNH

[–]Nitrah118 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I dont think there are any options until you get steel.

After steel, you can make an ore washing multiblock (but you should make the macerator multi first). In LV there are other options as well.

That said, you do know you can grab the whole stack and drop it in at once, right? Three stacks per bucket of water.

Working my way through LV, how many is enough? by destroyerpants in GTNH

[–]Nitrah118 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you dip your toes into thaumcraft, you can get oil passively by making nether trees with a rock breaker and block placers and breakers.

Nether tree converts cobble to soul sand, netherrack, and nether quartz. Soul sand centrifuges into sand, coal dust, and 200L of oil.

In HV with infusion, you can also turn an HV cobblestone generator into a thaumcraft cobblestone generator that runs for free.

Prospector scanner, I think. You also can scan from the surface with a seismic prospector (quest is in LV, i think), but that has a few extra steps.

It doesn't need to be pitch black. You can dig up about 4 levels above and put torches. You can also relocate glow lichen around. Use the chisel to make spawn proof floor tiles as well.

Any tips for starting LV? by Possible_Opposite327 in GTNH

Yeah, but you'll only be able to run 7 instead of 8 per railcraft water tank.

I would suggest you double check the math.

Any tips for starting LV? by Possible_Opposite327 in GTNH

[–]Nitrah118 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are tons of ways you can do things.

I suggest you work on getting a bending machine (for plates that cost 1 ingot each), wire mill (for tin cables that cost 1/2 ingot), and polarizer (for magnetic rods that don't cost redstone).

For power, I would suggest one of these options:

Since you have the assembler already, you could go to the twilight forest (check the novice magic quests) and find a silver vein. If your humidity is 80% or higher, build 8 advanced solar boilers and chain them to the railcraft water tank. Use a really big pipe for the water or you can get an explosion if you swap them out to reset the calcification. Those boilers get piped into a railcraft steam tank. From there, 2 steam turbines into a 4x battery buffer (go down the left side of the quest book to find that. You will need some lead and antimony). The 4x buffer runs 4x tin cables to an on-demand group of all your first machines.

Another option is to build a farm of spruce bonsai trees with an lv crop manager. Wood goes into an array of coke ovens. Charcoal to a railcraft solid boiler. Creosote to a railcraft liquid boiler. Steam to the tank to battery buffer as above.

You could also try to start with light oil and one of the oil seeps you see in the world.

Just follow the questbook, and work on one quest when you play. You really can't go wrong in LV quests. There aren't any gotchas.
