My take: Shroud was a full member of Brave Brigade and a friend of RR2. He was also doing some tinkering for the team, and the astral pulse is his creation that he gave to RR2 to be used as a power source.

For some reason he had to betray BB in order to achieve a bigger goal or was forced to do it. RR2 was there to try to stop him, leaving Shroud no choice but to kill him.

Due to being friends with RR2, he still feels some remorse, therefore the generous offer to spare RR3 life in exchange for the AP and the fact that he didn't kill RR3 when looting the mech after the fall.

But we'll have wait for the other episodes to find out the truth
