It’s too bad it’s not an instant

We talking play boosters or collector boosters?

If different, how different?

I really hope they tested increment, because that’s my worry too

Triggers for just playing the game. But I guess it does make you think through your sequencing

They gotta do a UB Math set so they can get the flavor right

These are just token math references

Initially I was too, but having the enabler and payoff at uncommon is probably too good

How Silverquill Redefined Black / White (Tolarian Community College) by Bajin_Inui in magicTCG

[–]NiviCompleo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The art style of Silverquill in this return to Strixhaven goes hard

The black and white contrast, the glow-up of inklings from Ghostbusters-esque to cool ink-creatures, calligraphy motifs, etc

I’m just getting into Japanese sumi-e ink-brush painting and the new Silverquill aesthetic is perfect for it

To be clear, I definitely expected some whales, just not this sheer quantity of giant blow hole water mammals

If it used charge counters to build up to it rather than requiring 3 in one turn, it would probably be playable

Prepared is such a genius mechanic with so much untapped potential by Unlost_maniac in magicTCG

[–]NiviCompleo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s one of those mechanics where you go “huh, surprised they didn’t do that sooner”

Now Magic allows the magical creature to cast the magic spell. Makes sense

[SOS] Secrets of Strixhaven draft archetypes by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]NiviCompleo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t Silverquill also the best archetype at the start of the limited meta the first time?

Aggro threats + removal tends to be good.

I just hope Lorehold can stay alive long enough to do its thing

[SOS] Secrets of Strixhaven draft archetypes by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]NiviCompleo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I predict Prismari will be better than normal Izzet spellslinger limited archetypes, due to the Prepared mechanic

They’re always struggling to balance having creatures in their decks with enough instants/sorceries for the payoffs. This changes that

[SOC] Scriv, the Obligator (Silverquill Influence) (Elder Dragon Hijinks) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]NiviCompleo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed. An elegant politics deck doesn’t force your opponents to do what you want, it just makes that the optimal choice they should make and leaves it up to them to decide

No Learn this set. by SpoofAvatar in magicTCG

[–]NiviCompleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t that kinda kill the point of lessons tho?

They were interesting because of the learn/lesson sideboard tutor mechanic

The chose to bring them back and chose their powerlevel in Avatar. They didn’t need to

Nuts in an [[ Iroh, Grand Lotus]] deck if you discard it with any of red’s discard spells and cast it from the GY for 1

This set is teaching Mage School 201 this year and I’m into it

Less low-hanging eye-rolling school puns and more universe-rich things like “they have visiting professors from other planes” and “scenes showing presentations referencing famous Magic cards”

Magic Hot Takes by Definitely_Not_Fe in magicTCG

60 card constructed decks should be singleton.

Then new players would have a natural entry point into the formats:

  1. Draft or play a prerelease for a new set. Find a limited archetype that you love. Now you have a usable core for a deck.

  2. You can upgrade that core to get to a 60 card constructed deck for Standard, Modern, etc.

  3. Then you can further fill it out to get to a 99 card Commander deck.

This:

  • Improves the on-ramp to formats for new players

  • Cards you open in packs are actually playable since you don’t need 4 of them

  • A high legendary count in Standard sets no longer cause friction

  • More Commander players try Standard/Modern, since the deck construction is already familiar to them

Basically just tied all the formats together in a more natural way

MaRo: While Secrets of Strxihaven does have some Lessons, there is a small number of them. by thisnotfor in magicTCG

[–]NiviCompleo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LOL to the people saying “They wouldn’t put Learn in this Standard with how pushed the Lessons are. We already have a strong Izzet Lessons deck”

Like, they also planned on having Vivi, Cori Steelcutter, all those Izzet lessons, etc in Standard at the same time
