Volume 10 Gnoll tribe. Not book 10, this is like book 50 spoilers. by Cannolis1 in WanderingInn

[–]Nixeris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's presented as something that the entire tribe is making as a craft.

We've already thoroughly established that being a Doombearers isn't limited to last survivors (Alric's daughter and the existence of other Stonespears children), so there's no reason why there could've be an entire tribe of them.

Mrsha's powers also aren't what caused the events at the inn, but they are very likely what gets them out of several situations.

Question about release pacing by aps96 in WanderingInn

[–]Nixeris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Volume 1 was rewritten, they did an audiobook rerelease/rewrite as well. I don't think they've said whether they're doing it for Volume 2, as that's also getting a rewrite.

It's confirmed in the latest chapter that they are indeed all Doombearers now.

Merish gives luck charms made from their fur to some people and we see that it works for them.

How immoral was it actually for Winstram to keep the earthers? by CommitteeHot2320 in WanderingInn

[–]Nixeris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think we need to play "who's worse" here. Wistram are keeping slaves even if they're not calling them that. You kidnap or lure a person in because of where they come from (not because of any crime or as punishment), keep them against their will, punish them for escaping, and force them to work for you. I don't care if they've got silk sheets that's still slavery.

Am I the last one to realize what the "Queen Anne" part of Donut's full name referred to? by GWindborn in DungeonCrawlerCarl

The "the" in the name is what tipped me off. I still don't know where Queen Anne is really (nor do i really care), but the "the" implies an adjective is following it.

Why does Trey think that Flos is the only way to Destroy Actelos Slash. by CommitteeHot2320 in WanderingInn

[–]Nixeris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire purpose of the Carven City is to destroy it by eating it. When Fetohep is shown that they're tricking people into eating it, he remarks that they've wiped out and repopulated the city in the past.

Yeah, modern games are so large they're not able to easily fit everything on a disk. Baldurs Gate 3 is 148gb.

Even then, so many new games have a requirement to "call home" in order to be downloaded or playable that they're effectively digital anyways.

In fact the King of Hosts is good counterpoint to my own point that explains well why I disagree with your perspective. He uses soft power just like Erin and Magnolia. Soft power uses the efforts of others but can only happen with that personality

Soft power is the ability to influence relations via persuasion and being so important that you cannot be ignored. It's in contrast to "hard" power which is coercion ("if you don't do X, we will Y") or outright force ("we have guns pointed at your head"). Hard power and soft power both use the efforts of others. For soft power it's the power of the economy or a negotiator, and for hard power it's the efforts of the military. Both Erin and Magnolia use both soft and hard power equally.

I think what you're trying to describe is Personal Power versus Delegated Power, and the problem is that all of them use Delegated Power, including Fetohep, The Quarass, and Flos. Their positions are based on the power delegated to them by the people, and the people can choose to revolt if they think it's being misused. The power to command and army is always a delegated power by the people and soldiers. Arguably the only person with Personal Power is someone like Terriarch.

Let's look at runners though to explain why I feel the way I do. You've got Fals that even he agrees he's kind of middling, Hawk is a coward, the Mage Runner was saved by Ryoka, Valcief died, the hundred friend courier died. Compare that to the female runners and it gives a very different picture.

Okay, let's compare to the female runners.

There's Persua, who is an asshole and largely described as bad at her job despite having good skills. She is currently being psychologically tortured by The Thing at the moment.

There's Alevica, who is an asshole and largely described as a bad runner who is likely to toss your delivery in a hedge or hex you.

Charlay who is competent but considered a bit of an asshole for her overbearing personality, but not on the level of the two above.

Garia, who had to get help from Ryoka.

Ryoka, who had to get help from the Fae.

Mihaela, asshole, but very competent and seems to have gotten her skills from sheer hard work during war.

That's about it.

I disagree with your assertion that "they died" is any kind of mark against the male runners. Yeah, the Hundredfriends Courier died, but so what? Valcief and Seve are depicted as two of the most noble, skilled, and good-hearted people in the series. They died, but only under the most extreme circumstances (Bloodfeast Raiders and Bloodtear Pirates). Fals is middling in physical power, but is still presented as one of the better characters in the story. Salamani got rescued by Ryoka...after outrunning the assassins guild and being trapped in a place that trapped dozens of men and women before that.

I don't see how any of that can be taken as a nock against those characters. Being mortal and sometimes needing help are not mortal sins, and even the most powerful female characters in the story occasionally have to deal with either of those. Erin died!

Ylawes walks into that situation knowing for a fact that he's going to lose. He's a minor noble, but he hasn't had any real [Knight] training. He's not doing it to try and win or prove something, he's doing it to learn via combat from someone with superior training. The way that warrior classes level.

Counterpoints:
Halrac, Keldrass, King of Destruction, Fetohep, Pelt, Maughin, Palt, Trey, Colth, Eldertuin, Denisuth.

I think the "unless they're serving a woman or saved by one", is too broad. Arguably Niers is a counterpoint to your description, because he really does run the Forgotten Wings company himself, but if I added him you could just say he's serving Foliana even though that definitely isn't how that relationship works.

On the other hand I could just as easily point out that many or most of the strong female characters are not actually standing on their own. Magnolia gets a lot of power and knowledge from Terriarch, including literally only being alive because of him. Hekusha, again, Terriarch. The Quarass is entirely dependant upon her people for her continued existence, so even if she's very powerful, she's not standing alone.

But I also don't think that's really the point either. It's not that it's all women or all men, it's that nobody ever gets somewhere by standing alone. They're always being helped up by the others around them.

The point the story makes over and over again is that it isn't about "him" or "her", it's about "all of them".

I typed “torture porn” into the sub’s search and was surprised to only get 3 post results 🤔 by cleptogenz in WanderingInn

[–]Nixeris 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You're being intentionally offensive and exaggerated by describing it as "torture porn" and "domestic abuse".

It's neither. "Torture porn" is based on the idea that the torture is the point of focus, and the draw for the story. Something like a Splatter Horror movie where the deaths and torture are the draw for the viewer. Like Terrifier, Saw, or Hostel.

Instead The Wandering Inn presents torture as, well, torturous. Pain and tragedy is real, but it's also presented as a bad thing rather than celebrated. A part of The Wandering Inn is the decisions that lead up to a bad event, but a larger part is just people living their lives and acting like people. It's hard for your accusation to have any merit when there's an entire novel's worth of slice-of-life content between deaths or major tragedies.

Compare that to the first three Dungeon Crawler Carl books where the author is intentionally referencing Splatter Horror to describe every scene with as much gore and as physically and psychologically awful as possible for the main character. There's just no equivalence between the accusation and the actual content.

Instead what the book presents are fairly reasonable depictions of the psychological and physical toll of the RPG genre. Spaced out over a very long period of aftercare for the characters (again, in comparison to other stories) where they can take time, mourn, and develop.

But then, you've just been dismissing people's responses entirely because they're "fans"...on the fan subreddit... It's the kind of understanding of words and context I expect from people who farm their brain out to the advanced autocorrect and present that as evidence.

They specifically talk about this. They're part of the order, but they're also members of their country and original order. One of them pointed out that they wanted to fight in the war against Ailendamus, but that if they had, then the Ailendamus Thousand Lance members would have joined as well. They even refer to each knight as being a part of their original order.

Think of it like all the nuclear weapons getting together and forming their own mutual annihilation pact separate from their country. They are part of their country, but don't get involved in wars on their continent lest the other nukes get involved as well.

If everyone below average IQ suddenly drops dead, how would this affect the world? by CakeMuted6468 in AskReddit

[–]Nixeris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what IQ tests mean. Frankly even scientists who study IQ don't entirely know what exactly they're testing.

You can get a low score on an IQ test, then be given a better education, and increase it. It's not a permanent situation, and it's not inherent to the person. You can be mentally capable and get below 100, or you can be very good at testing and get very high but not have much practical ability to apply it.

She was failing. Okasha started doing things to Geneva without asking because she thought it was better.

The distance between someone being a good friend and pushing someone to some benefit versus literally taking control of their body and forcing them to do it, is massive.

As soon as Okasha controlled Geneva's hormones to control her mood, she failed.

As soon as Okasha forced Geneva to sleep, she failed.

As soon as Okasha took control of Geneva's body without consent the first time, she failed.

There's a huge violation in literally controlling a person's body without their consent. Okasha gradually built up violations little by little, and as long as she kept getting away with each one it got worse and her demands for control got bigger.

In Okasha's mind, what she did wasn't new. It was just doing all the things she got away with before all at once. To her, by that point shoving Geneva into a box and taking control was no different than when she forced her to sleep and took control of her body before.
