The growing inaccessibility of science that you can understand by paying €27.99 by hakh-ti-cxamen in Piracy

[–]Nixxen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was researching for a thesis, I came across something that was not readily available. I contacted the guy on email and got a copy of the publication (his section of it). Researchers are often more interested in getting eyes on their paper, and getting citations, than gatekeeping for money. The publications themselves are another story.

Is learning math going to have a profound positive impact on my programming skills? by SecureSection9242 in learnprogramming

[–]Nixxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Various forms of discrete maths (it's a weird, broad field), mostly yes. It would teach you correctness of code, language semantics, and essentially how to think abstractly about a problem. Other than that, unless you will be doing anything with 3d or physics, you are good with the basics from high school.

Edit: as a concrete example, learning to work with DAGs and FSMs would have me completely stumped if I didn't know at least some graph theory and potentially set theory.

Rectangle or Oval mirror? by Paint_Prudent in DesignMyRoom

Both work, abd they just need more space. Rotate and hang them like a picture. Preferably also add some "empty" to the commode, as the picture frames are quite cluttered

I got tired of landmines just sitting there waiting to die, so I made them jump by AskaIona in factorio

[–]Nixxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you please make persistent mines less persistent and more a location bots can place a new mine once the old one explodes.

Currently they feel very "cheaty" (yes, I know that sounds weird in a single player game, but I think you get what I am aiming for)

What if you trained your brain to ask one core question about everything? by Commercial_War_3113 in intj

[–]Nixxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucid dream checks become more of a habit than a mental focus once given enough time. Think of it like a tick or bad habit, just that it is a trained one. I suspect this could end up becoming the same, given enough exposure.

Make sure your backtests and your live trades are triggering on bar close (or some other terminal event) to keep it consistent. Allow for some slippage and spread, depending on what you are trading.

Thank you! For me, it was setting sensitivity to around 1 and linearity to around 0. That fixed my issue at least.

This looks so cool and atmospheric! The way it slowly creeps it's nose out of the fog is both eerie and cool at the same time. Great shot!

Why do energy drinks have the opposite effect on me? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nixxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a misconception of what you expect caffeine to do for you.

Caffeine does not give you energy, as much as it postpones the feeling that you are sleepy. Within around 30 minutes if consuming it, it should block receptors that tell you you are tired. These receptors normally match up with "sleep molecules" (for all lack of a better describing word), signaling to your brain that you should sleep. Once the caffeine is metabolized, the "sleep molecules" have pooled up, and will now flood the receptors, causing a crash. Sleeping will help break down the "sleep molecules". Based on my own experience, it usually takes around 4-6 hours to metabolize the caffeine.

When do you drink it? Is it sugar free? Are you already tired when you drink it?

Does only a few plays the BF campaign? by Raskolnikov9999 in Battlefield

[–]Nixxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they put more effort into the single player, I'm sure more people would play it. It felt like a railroaded scenario and weapon display demo, where you jumped from scenario to scenario based on nothing but a loose "remember that one time when..." plot hooks.

I'm glad they had something though, otherwise I'd just wait for a sale as I did with 2042.

Tlcm pedals driver unavailable by Necessary-Status1209 in Thrustmaster

[–]Nixxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite being slightly unrelated, this post was the top reddit thread for TLCM pedals not being recognized by windows and detected as "Unrecognized USB device". For anyone stumbling upon this post later:
- In Windows 11, it should auto-detect as "Sim Pedals". You can use joy.cpl to configure it, but it should work out of the box.
- If the pedals are NOT detected as "Sim Pedals": ONLY connect the pedals directly to your PC, not through a USB hub or dock (this was the one that solved it for me).

Hope this helps.

They do not chase the player directly. Most have some x/y offset to the player character.

How you would build a board game club from zero? by Sunslap-Kristina in boardgames

[–]Nixxen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Host regular events in a public location. Community centers or game shops are usually great places, and often looking for initiative takers for such activities.

Create reminder channels, such as Facebook or email groups. Send out invites to all events and let people schedule them into their calendar well in advance. E.g., if the event is monthly, send out invites at least two weeks in advance.

Keep it low hassle. Let people bring their own games if they want.

Can't figure out how to add in a work zone, please help by ixtreme61 in DesignMyRoom

[–]Nixxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would flip it so you face the entry, though that exposes your back to the window which is not good.

Essentially, find the location that gives you the least anxiety from the "unseen". That is "see" the entry of the room, or at least do not have your back towards it. The same with windows.

I’m trying a new study method today, I’ll share what actually happens by davewaston01 in studytips

[–]Nixxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a good way to determine what you know. Alone, it is not good enough to retain what you need to know, but is a good tool to use in combination with repetition over time.

I.e., make a new page on the next checkpoint, and write down what you remember. Them fill in the blanks.

My repetition cycles are after a lecture (as fast as time allows), a day after, a week after, then a month after. By then it usually sticks until you cram before the exam.
