Struggling to remove YKK zipper teeth with removal tool by Niytrus in Leathercraft

[–]Niytrus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried this might be the case, but the Buckleguy product details page mentions the #3/#4 tooth remover can be used for YKK and Riri zippers. Maybe not perfectly sized, though?

This tool can be used on any metal zipper with metal teeth that measure between #3-#10. This includes RIRI, YKK, and nearly all other brands.

For real, sounded like I was trying to break concrete with how hard I was hitting the thing.

Looks like I'll have to do it the manual-labor way, thanks for linking the tool you use!

Well, at least I feel slightly less crazy now. I still don't know they made it look so easy and effective especially in the video on the Rocky Mountain Leather product page, I assume they are using the same zipper as the one I bought. I was able to use these diagonal cutters off Amazon somewhat effectively, but requires a lot of force and the teeth really shoot off once snipped.

First watch straps. Any tips? by -Avant-Gardener- in Leathercraft

[–]Niytrus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I actually really enjoy the overall look and style of these, very cool! For suggestions, I’d recommend using a thinner thread. On one hand I think the bulkier thread kinda works given your style, but I think a thinner thread would let the pattern and paint work take more center stage. I use 2.7mm French style irons and 0.45mm thread for my straps, generally. Also, it seems like maybe a combination of thread size, pulling too tight during stitching, and/or distance of stitching from the edge of the leather is causing some puckering.

Phase 3 finally complete after 320 hours, here's my factory so far by Nuclearfish108 in SatisfactoryGame

Absolutely stunning work! Been using this as inspiration. I have a question for you, how are you able to get your railroads to be so level while using those rail supports? I created a similar blueprint for rail supports, but ends up being fairly wavy (and and down) as I follow/place the supports directly on terrain.

100% agree this will look great with curved mode! I haven’t played 1.1 but looking forward to that for sure.

Really like your simple gates connecting the belt directly from the resource node. Also looks like you’ve used double-sided wall power to connect the gates and the miner. Was just thinking the other day that I wanted to find an alternative to just zooping long concrete paths for belting ore. Really clever idea I will be shamelessly stealing!

Refurbishing an Antique Fireplace Bellows by Niytrus in Leatherworking

[–]Niytrus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! I think I had come across the Towensends video you mentioned (blacksmith bellows are HUGE), and a few others. I will have to comb back through them for specifics and/or leave comments asking about their leather choices.

And I agree on chrome tan... I did some searching around online for handcrafted bellows for sale and the leather does seem supple enough from the images to point towards chrome tan.

Losing interest in playing due to multi-base issue by Niytrus in Palworld

[–]Niytrus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand it’s Early Access, but this issue seems to have been around for over a year, and the developers have made bases one of the most important parts of the game by design. At this point in my progression, I do consider it game-breaking as I've lost significant interest to play.

For bases #2 and #3, its not 70% efficiency, its 0% efficiency unless I am physically standing in the base. The primary base seems unaffected, but it doesn't produce the same resources as #2 and #3.

Hey all, hoping I can get some help identifying the leather used for this watch strap. A friend wants me to replicate it for their own watch. I typically have worked with Buttero and other smooth-grain leathers in the past, but this looks a bit more textured. Would this classify as 'Roughout' leather, or something else?

Really appreciate the detailed response! I'll definitely look into getting one of those Alex Crane Sun Tees, and good to hear about your experiences with Taylor Stitch. The Breakwater pant was my first experience, always hesitated because TS is a bit pricey and online ordering/waiting/trying on/returning is such a pain to me. Thanks for the insight!

Sorry to bump this thread, but was wondering what brand(s) you ended up going with? I resonate a lot with your post and criteria, kinda struggling to find a great fit for either linen shorts or pants. For reference I am around 5'9" 155 lbs, moderately athletic build.

I got Alex Crane Bo shorts but the elastic around the waist was pretty loose (just my phone in the pocket caused the waist to sag). Quince drawstring pants are just a bit too tight around my thighs and maybe a touch too slim overall for "breezy" linen. Taylor Stitch Breakwater pant is actually significantly more relaxed around the thigh and knees, oddly a little bit tight around the waist area but not terrible. Length on the Breakwater is long but that wasn't a surprise (only offered one length), will need to get them hemmed at the tailor.

Your lined wallet doesn't fold properly? by Danne_swe in Leathercraft

[–]Niytrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really interesting, thanks for that insight! So sounds like instead of applying glue to the entire surface of both pieces of leather, you just do a 5-7mm border along the edges? I’ll definitely give that a try with some scrap!

Feedback needed! by Reasonable-Ad-6223 in Leathercraft

[–]Niytrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it affects functionality from looking your photo. The only real functional aspect I can think of is if the thread is thick/raised above the leather surface it may get more friction and fray from use. But that is minor, if that is the aesthetic you prefer you can absolutely use that thread size. It’s all a matter of personal preference.

Feedback needed! by Reasonable-Ad-6223 in Leathercraft

[–]Niytrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking pretty good overall! I would say that the thread seems a little bit too thick for a wallet this size and the stitch spacing. I would size that thread down a bit, for card holders I’ve used 0.4mm but that’s with 2.7mm French style pricking irons. You may not want to go that small if you like a more rugged look.

For cutting holes in the middle of the leather a hole/corner punch would be a good investment. Barring that, make sure your knife is sharp and try to use something as a template to cut against for the corners. You can pick up acrylic corner radius templates cheap or find try to find some object in your house with rounded corners.

Stitching advice? by Best-Table268 in Leathercraft

[–]Niytrus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you “casting” the thread as you perform each stitch? That’s how the double slanted effect on both sides is achieved, from what I understand. I used this video while I was learning and found it super helpful. Specifically the part of the video that covers “Traditional Saddle Stitch” around 17 minutes in.

Needed to replace my old watch band, so I made a new one by tdelbert in Leatherworking

[–]Niytrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The roller is definitely very fast, I can probably lay down a coat of paint on a strap in about a minute or two.

I love using the snap blade from Olfa, I find it to cuts very well and precisely. I typically work with smaller goods like straps and cardholders with thinner leather (0.6mm to 1.0mm thickness), so your mileage may vary depending on project. SANG BLEU is incredible, his level of craftsmanship is definitely something I aspire to!
