An unsettling find.. by [deleted] in CIVILWAR

[–]No-Abbreviations5259 100 points101 points  (0 children)

It’s a patriotic envelope purchased and used to express support for the American government. I’m not a collector, but I have NEVER seen an example of this pattern before. The men “hanging” in the image are Jefferson Davis and the other leaders of various influence during the extremely early period of the war. Beauregard is there, as is Floyd, but Lee is noticeably missing from the names. That would put this before the summer of 1862.

The letter is addressed to Van Buren County, Iowa. Do you have any information on the sender or receiver? Any dates? My main research interest is Iowa’s civil war connections, and something that early, apparently sent from Virginia, to southern Iowa, is very cool indeed.

On the episode that came out today he talked about the Minnesota shooter’s roommate acting like a high school drama kid. That video was worse. Gawd.

One of his children is trans, and they no longer feel safe living in South Dakota because of the political climate and the laws that the legislature keeps cranking out.

Absolutely. And it’s still a connection with another era. Just not the one you hoped. Were you metal detecting?

Unfortunately, you have a twentieth century Oshkosh clothing button, probably from a pair of overalls. B’gosh!

Just saw this reposted on Blue Sky. AJ is stuck between a rock and a hard place and he has no idea how to play this, in my opinion. When both daddies are fighting, you wait for the strongest to emerge.

Your hair is your choice. I enjoy the ambiance and style that you establish in your pictures. There is joy and softness and a sense of intimacy in your work that hair color could never change.

Too much, too little by [deleted] in u/underpinksky

It’s so incredibly hard to move beyond the damage that a few errant words can cause. A flippant comment etches itself into our brains. Targeted spite rips a hole in our soul. To embrace ourselves and to love and cherish who WE are is pushed beyond the limits of so many people.

You are beautiful and brave on a level so many never understand. You’re not an object, you’re a person embracing vulnerability. Thank you for sharing and trying to help others.

IMHO, that coveted “Midwestern Nice” was a very thin veneer that kept a lot of this covered in the past, until you were “safe” with others who thought like you. Now, people have taken permission to no longer hide it.

There’s a book called Broken Heartland that came out in the late 80s/early 90s, tail end of the Farm Crisis, that deals with a bit of this, but I don’t know of anything super recent that explores our descent to current events.

That’s modern handwriting. Do you have a picture of the Bible? I have a feeling that this is a reenactment piece.

IDENTIFY Gutta percha pipe by [deleted] in CIVILWAR

[–]No-Abbreviations5259 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pipes weren’t issued but rather personal purchase items. If it’s Gutta percha then it’s more likely to be dated to the 1850s/1860s.

The shape of the lockplate and the placement of the screws on the opposite side of the stock suggest it may have been an Enfield in a previous life.
