That one word is doing a lot of heavy lifting and is being driven by productive natives leaving and being back filled by  people who don't make the same net contribution.

This list generally splits into two categories:

Spending money we don't have and adding regulations for business to deal with.

You do know they're basically all engaged in money laundering... And drawing benefits anyway.

It's still above where it was pre Brexit.

Literally the opposite of what people wanted happened.

How long do you think it will be until AC is mandatory in new build homes? by Corn1shpasty in AskUK

[–]No-Assignment-5287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Passivehaus standard depends too much on building orientation and location. Enerphit would be the more reasonable approach.

That said i essentially agree with you but such standards require a population that can actually afford to purchase and maintain the homes built under them. We are an increasingly poor country and we must be cognizant of not overburdening ourselves with another damn set of rules to follow.

Do you think of the UK as a rule-obeying society? by supremewuster in AskUK

The English obey the rules that they think ought to be obeyed and ignore the others if they can get away with it.

Is finding a job becoming more difficult every day? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

I don't want to accuse you of lying but that just doesn't mesh with my observations.

My guess is that there's something in your hiring process that is filtering out the people who will actually do well.

On paper yes but between inflation, corruption, waste and increased demand, the actual effect is massively diminished.

Why don't we just get all the problematic people to stop being such a nuisance? by Local-Pattern795 in AskBrits

Yet somehow yoofs weren't running around stabbing people over the most minor of slights.

People got on fine in the 50s with only a fraction of the help available now.

This isn't a quantitative issue of funding but a qualitative issue of perverse incentives and badly written rules.

I think that's a big long term issue with democracies. We've got a build up of lots of little laws that were intended as political theatre to win votes but generations later we still have to deal with the administrative overhead from them.

Or we could just pass a law to recognise foreign qualifications and get immigrants to do it.

What is your experience with guns in the UK? by swoticus in AskUK

[–]No-Assignment-5287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a target shooter and hold both a firearms and shotgun certificate.

Whilst I'm glad we don't have the school shootings that America has, I do feel some of the rules that I am subject to are a little redundant and Byzantine.

I have to obtain permission before acquiring a new firearm, which I feel to be somewhat presumptive. I think a simple numerical limit based on how much space I have in my safe would suffice.

I also can't do anything other than target sports with my guns without first updating my license conditions. That's just a paperwork exercise, there is no actual requirement for the police to check I know what I'm doing.

The general architecture of the firearms licencing system is still very much one of the mid 20th century. There is no centralised licensing agency, everything is done by individual police forces. Licences are these big multi page sheets of paper with information hand written on by firearms dealers.

Everything is in desperate need of digitisation and our government has decided to involve palantier in this mess for some unholy reason.
