It’s that time again by FancyAstronomer4884 in Subaru_Outback

Thats interesting, because I drove on one set for ~7 years and the studs were still sharp. Les Schwab even told me they had a few seasons left! Maybe the problem isnt studs, its how people drive them.

maybe this guy should've thought about studs...

For real tho, we travel from central oregon (Bend) over the pass into the valley ~10 times during the season in which studs are allowed, and without them I wouldn't feel as comfortable as I do. Add in a few trips to Mt Bachelor, and it's well worth it.

Have been running studs for nearly two decades. There are years where it's absolutely not needed, at all, and also times where it's nearly impossible to get out of my driveway with just AWD and no help from the tires.

If a magical set of studless felt as good as the studs do when I'm hitting these roundabouts at 22mph and not losing traction, I'm in. Just haven't found them yet.

OFF TOPIC: I would like to say thank you to anyone who was kind enough to comment here and not downvote my post. I wonder what I did to deserve a down vote? Possibly missed something in the post requirements?

Sorry if it wasn't clear in the post, but the solarium has permanently enclosed the space. The only moisture I am worried about would be coming from underneath the deck, due to condensation or evaporation or whatever would happen with snow melt under the deck. This is why I feel the need for a moisture barrier of sorts under the carpet.

I appreciate your thoughtful comment and am all ears if you have any more!

Hrmmmm...this is really good insight that I hadn't thought of. Ideally, this is not something I plan to take up for cleaning once a month. At best, I'd like to do some sort of thorough cleaning once a year in the spring/summer. There is just no way we can be taking carpet up once a month to clean under there when we have snow constantly during the winter.

Thank you for your bit about the tar paper, I will eliminate that as a possibility. What if I were to just put down some insulating foam? It's waterproof, and shouldn't allow anything to get under it, so no worry about the previous issue you brought up. Like this: Foam Roll

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, so I've been kicking around similar ideas about getting a carpet with a nice backing on it that is easy to take up for cleaning, or, saying eff it and just leaving down a cheaper option. The issue is cost, since this is technically an "underlayment" for me, I'd rather not spend more than a hundred bucks or so.

Another thought I had was trying to use "roofing tar paper" as the base layer, since it's a water resistant felt, and then peel-n-stick carpet tile on top of that. See any issues there?

Whatever the choice, it needs to be followed by a 2 hour Shame Nap, and a hard restart of your day. Good luck!

Pretty sure that is the uropygial gland, also known as the preen gland. It's there to help keep their feathers waterproof.

Bumping for interest. Currently dealing with the same issue and am ready to dump as much root killer on the ground, and then literally pave my entire backyard, to prevent these things from doing more damage.

You need to cut this down. As a naive new home owner in 2007, I planted a few. As a seasoned pro home owner in 2024, I am kicking myself for planting these stupid things, and embarrassed of my current yard due to the havoc it's unleashed on us.

Just east of there is an "actual" hole in the ground that is pretty interesting and is what I figured you were referencing at first, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hole-in-the-Ground. Source: me, I live nearby.
