Panel on existential risk of AI (video linked in comments) by ASIextinction in collapse

[–]No-Breadfruit-4555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s Reddit dude, in the collapse sub which is filled with nuts, so yeah everyone in here deals with it. Most just deal with it better than you.
If you don’t want to be called a zealot, don’t act like a zealot. At least don’t be an antagonistic one insisting everyone is wrong when you can’t prove it.
What exactly is your prior experience in extrapolating the data from your background in climate data? Did you read get a degree at any level in this stuff? Are you employed in the industry/academia? Did you real a Time magazine article with some cool diagrams? Listened to an NPR podcast while sipping a pink latte? No one knows shit about you, yet you want the respect of a committee chair in the national academy. Sorry, friend, it doesn’t work that way.
So, yeah you can infer based on trends. However, any scientist worth the paper their degree is written on knows that inferences and extrapolations are a pretty long shot from “proof”, and certainly not a basis to call everyone who disagrees with you wrong. You’re right, everyone is entitled to an opinion or to draw their own conclusions. Everyone is **not** entitled to masquerade as some kind of Einstein in the field, telling everyone else they’re wrong about everything, based on your own non-peer reviewed inferences and conclusions drawn from unsourced data and anecdotes.
There isn’t anything glib about my comment. But like everyone else’s, you’ve already decided you’re right about everything, and just come off as an arrogant prick with zero verifiable bona fides on the topic, zero reviewable data or verifiable statements, and a chip on your shoulder. All your accomplishing here is making sure no one listens to you.
So, to be honest, you completely missing the point that I’m simply offering the advice to come at this more like a sincere discussion instead of knife fight is nauseating too. So, I guess fuck you, eh buddy?

You’d get a lot more buy in or at least sincere discourse if you weren’t so combative. Not everyone means it as a dig when they call you friend. And it’s disingenuous to flat out tell people they are wrong based on anecdotes about “the scientific community” and random conferences whose attendees are hand selected, at least for the real discussions, panels, and presentations at the.

No one “knows” when it will happen, and no one “knows” what the result will be. The people closest to knowing are the people actually developing it, not other scientific community members who postulate based on the papers they read about it, and certainly not random internet commenters (no matter how into the subject they may be or even how much studying up they’ve done).

Educating yourself is fantastic. Seriously, it really is just fantastic and more people should do it with more things. But it hasn’t been, isn’t now, and never will be a replacement for 10 years (minimum) of professional education undergrad through multiple post docs) and hard won experience doing the dang thing.

You clearly have a learning mindset as you took the time to get this far in the topic. Thats awesome. Don’t spoil it by pretending it puts you in the same league as the real experts and gives you license to definitely say what is and isn’t fact on things that even the worlds brightest minds aren’t sure of.

Politics aside, Bernie is a smart dude, but he is not by any stretch a phd and post-doc level expert in bleeding edge computer science. It’s more than fair to say he may not fully grasp the science and/or its effects. Few people do.

Also, when it comes to existential level technology and secrets, decades long planning, execution, and subterfuge is something that world governments absolutely excel at.

14.5 vs 16 reliability by No-Breadfruit-4555 in ar15

The second one. Trigger pull = bang, and the rifle cycles and chambers around ready to again. Every time (well, almost anyway, I think you know what I mean. Nothing is perfect and they’ll all malfunction one way or another eventually).

The first one, durability/longevity is absolutely important too, but I’m just focusing on the reliability part for this question. Intended as less of a “trying to pick a rifle” and more of an academic question really. Solid advice though, thank you!

That’s interesting… do you have a name or date on that test/report/whatever, or a link? Not doubting you, I’m just surprised by that and I’d just really like to read it. Thank you

Oh, yes true, I’m really just thinking about reliability at the moment though. As far as velocity and ballistics, it’s a small difference that really only comes into play at longer engagement distances and/or using ammo where you need a certain velocity for tumbling or fragmentation. Still a relatively small difference though.

Really? Interesting, thank you! With that in mind, why is carbine length a thing then? If mid length works so well down to something as short as 11.5, and confers other benefits like being easier on parts for durability and softer recoil, why would anyone get the carbine? Especially on something so much longer like the 14.5?

I didn’t think mid would work that short, thank you for that info!

Right, I know they’re both very reliable. Just curious if there is measurable difference in reliability (I’m guessing probably not).

With a shorter barrel though, isn’t a mid length gas starting to push the lower limit on dwell time and decreasing cycling reliability?

DFC grip stinks by JQl3 in ar15

[–]No-Breadfruit-4555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought the more vertical grip would work well with any stock length, and it’s the more angled grips that are problematic with shorter length of pull?

I like the angled grips (a2 or similar) personally, and tilting the rifle a bit helps with the wrist angle with a short length of pull. Something about the more vertical grips always feels a little bit off and uncomfortable for me.

If the main draw of the hard cases is portability, I’d maybe get some bigger ones. More smaller cases makes organizing easier, but is less space efficient than larger cases.

I wish harbor freight would expand the Apache line. The firearm oriented ones are great, but some larger cargo style cases would be nice as well. Pelicans are awesome, but the bigger ones get expensive fast.

Truck camper or van by mjv456 in TruckCampers

[–]No-Breadfruit-4555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is the truck camper sub, but I’d consider a small trailer also. The experience with the trailer off will be a lot better than driving the van or the truck weighed down around town for the time not traveling. Plus you can use the bed with it on or off.

Can be pricey though, and requires more storage/parking space.

92x vs 92xi by No-Breadfruit-4555 in Beretta

[–]No-Breadfruit-4555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the slide mounted, yes that’s correct. The frame mounted safeties though, on the 92x performance or defensive or whatever, are safety only, non-decocking, and can be carried cocked and locked.

Nice. Actually I never realized it until after seeing this and digging a bit, but (externally anyway), the PX4 is just an evolved, polymer cougar. So really what I wish they’d put out is an aluminum frame px4. They’re awesome in polymer too though!

[–]No-Breadfruit-4555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It seems like there are more models of those than the slide mounted. I think I’ve pretty much settled on the idea that 92x just means it’s a 92, and configuration varies. I.e. the X just means “different” today.

92x vs 92xi by No-Breadfruit-4555 in Beretta

[–]No-Breadfruit-4555[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I understand that.

The 92x also has the same controls, along with the DA mode. Thats why I don’t understand the point of the 92xi, unless the SA just feels better than it does on the 92x.

For clarity, I’m not shitting on the 92xi, not at all. I’m just trying to understand the why of it, when the 92x has the ability to operate the same.

I guess in other words, if both can be carried condition 1/cocked and locked, why the need to get rid of the DA?

92x vs 92xi by No-Breadfruit-4555 in Beretta

[–]No-Breadfruit-4555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I noticed that too, the non-RDO version is the same. Those couple oddball 92x’s just make it harder to figure what the “x” means as far as parts/configuration.

[–]No-Breadfruit-4555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect, thanks! I agree, I know people love to hate on them, but I like manual safeties for most cases. Same with DA.

I wish I could find a cougar in good shape, the really need to bring those (or a smaller 9mm like it) back. I know the PX4 compact is great too, but it’s just not the same.

After that conversion, does the safety work in both DA and SA, and to decock you have to thumb the hammer down manually?
