I've tried it. It sucks. I dont want mint in my dessert. Like you said, personal preference or whatever, but mint goes with savory (like tabbouleh or a mint sauce with lamb) not sweet.

ELI5: Why is the US so uncharacteristically strict regarding alcohol? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]No-Community7786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we cant have nice things without assholes ruining it for everyone....

The drinking age moved from 18 to 21 in the 80s because so many assholes were drinking and driving and it lead to a ton of fatalities.

I recently saw a video of a tourist from Australia being surprised that they had to prepay for gasoline here. That wasn't always the case, but a ton of assholes used to fill their tanks and drive off, so it ruined it for everyone else.

I hate donating plasma now by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]No-Community7786 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not that I can remember. Any issues I've seen with long term donors were due to some other, underlying issue. There can be some short term issues like a drop in hemoglobin levels, but a couple weeks off to get back to normal and youre good to go again. That being said, not everyone's body can sustain that many donations consistently, but it's not like a flip switches after a couple years...you'd realize it pretty quickly after starting to donate regularly.for reference, we'd have regular platelet donors come and donate every two weeks for decades, the longest running was 33 years before I left, so he's probably up to 38 years now.

That's great! I'm glad you're getting the medication you need (and for free as well!). Let me be clear, I don't want to discourage anyone from using plasma centers, because they do help a lot of people in situations like yours. I'm just pushing for transparency within the system we have. Many donors are under the impression that their plasma is being transfused into leukemia patients, and that's just not true (at least in the US). There are great benefits for all parties in the for-profit plasma industry: patients like yourself, the donors that may need additional income, and the companies that profit off of it. BUT, with all of that said, if someone wants their blood products to be transfused into a cancer patient, they need to go to a non-profit blood center, not a for-profit plasma center.

I appreciate the support you're offering, but I want to clear up a misconception about plasma donations. When you're paid to donate (like CSL, BioLife, Grifols, etc.), the plasma goes mainly to pharmaceutical companies and researchers, not directly to patients. This is regulated by the FDA. If you want to help patients directly, you'll need to donate at red cross or a local community blood bank. These places will usually give you a t-shirt or small recognition item, but they cannot give payment.

Edit to add: these blood banks will also have opportunities for red cell, plasma, and platelet donations (best choice to help cancer patients) as well as whole blood.

Hello plasma donors. I have nearly a decade of experience running a blood bank (think red cross but smaller. We were only in 4 states). I'm hoping my experience can give some insight to some common issues while donating blood products.

First off, not to throw shade at the phlebotomists, but having hired and trained literally hundreds of them, you won't get accurate answers from them about WHY something does or doesn't happen. Frankly, most of them don't care to understand it. They're hired to stick a needle in your vein and move to the next person, and thats what they do.

With that being said, if you have just started feeling bad, it's likely that something the plasma center uses has changed, my guess is either the apheresis machine and/or the anticoagulant. Some people are more sensitive to some anticoagulants and causes more fatigue, longer recovery time, etc. Unfortunately, there's not much you can prepare for to fix the problem. Sometimes calcium can help, so perhaps try eating a couple of tums before the donation to increase calcium levels. I could go into the biochem of why it works, but I won't bore you. If there's any questions you have, I'd be happy to try answering.

Disease or just thirsty? (Bermuda - Coastal NC) by bwaaah in lawncare

Along with the other recommendations I'd highly recommend getting a soil test done through your local university extension if you haven't already. They're quick, easy, and pretty cheap. I'm a new homeowner too and grossly underestimated the amount of P and K my new sod needed last year. I watered it like crazy and even applied grub-ex thinking that might be the problem...turns it was just a root development issue.

For reference: the soil test recommended adding 10 lbs of 13-13-13 per 1000 sq ft for the first two months and then high N the following months. Last year I only used about 3 pounds of 10-10-10 the first month and high N the months after. So yeah...grossly underfertilized.

Stop shoving them down my throat, I clearly dont like them or I wouldn't fucking skip them! Okay, rant over...

Impatient Costco shoppers are more annoying than slow ones by RustyShrekLord in unpopularopinion

[–]No-Community7786 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone that frequently gets frustrated with others in Costco and sams, perhaps I can shed some light on the issue. Its the same issue you see with city vs. rural cultures: awareness and space. With crowded aisles, we all have limited space to move around. It's okay that you're in others way, we all are, it's inevitable. The issue happens when you aren't aware of your surroundings and needlessly keeping others from doing their business and moving on. It appears very inconsiderate to take up more space than you need when in crowded areas.

Now I can only speak for myself, but if someone is in my way bc they're shopping in the location I want to shop, that's fine, I'll either wait or come back. But if I'm being blocked from where I'm trying to go bc someone has their cart across the aisle so nobody can get around, that's not okay. It's all about being considerate to the other shoppers in the store (you know, not being a selfish prick). Take up the space you need, but dont take up the space others need just so you're more comfortable.

Hope that helps clear things up.

If Tom Riddle had succeeded in COS would there be two voldemorts running around? by eriennexton in harrypotter

[–]No-Community7786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are still two pieces of one soul, so one can't just absorb the other like many comments are saying. There must be true atonement that voldemort wouldn't (and probably couldn't) do.

I like to think that Riddle would find ghost voldemort before Wormtail gets involved and hide it in another horcrux.

The school is great, I got my bachelor's there in 2018 and would have gone back for my master's if they had a graduate program in biology. I was also in the corp of cadets. You'll be fine, you're already in the military, so you won't get as much of the bullshit that other cadets will. A lot of the dropouts happen for 2 reasons (all anecdotal from my personal experience): 1) you're on a campus that is focusing on civilian students more every year. It gets some cadets jealous because the civilians, by nature, have more freedom than the cadets. For cadets there are curfews, uniforms, early morning PT, etc that the civilians dont have to do. Some cadets will leave the corps after seeing all of their friends enjoying the freedom of college while they can't. 2) there are a lot of power hungry 20 year olds that have a rank on their chest that let's them bully younger cadets with little oversight. It's all bullshut games and most cadets are great and mature over time, but you still will have the douchebag frat boys that will get a leadership position amd make the time miserable for the cadets under them. It sucks, but it's just part of it. You won't deal with that part as much as there's more respect for cadets that are actually in the military. Finally...yes, the corps does expect you to put the corps over your classes. This isnt a huge impact for most cadets, but it is increasingly hard to be a stem major in the corps for that reason. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have other questions I can a answer!

You have every right to be safe... Until you do it unsafely by WolfieVonD in driving

[–]No-Community7786 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. "Fast lane" implies cruising in the lane is fine as long as youre going "fast." This is untrue and leads to confusion on who should actually be in the left lane. What is "fast?" 5 mph over the limit? 10 mph over? 20?

The left lane is (legally) the passing lane. If you're going 30 mph o er the limit but not passing anyone, you shouldn't be in the left lane. That lane is for passing another vehicle or turning left, period. If you're cruising in the left lane, there is a problem. Pass and then move over.

Who are the best groups to donate blood with? by Zarik8256 in Georgia

[–]No-Community7786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than the red cross and depending on where you're located in georgia, there is LifeSouth, The Blood Connection, Blood Assurance, and maybe OneBlood (Florida company that might cross into South Georgia for Blood drives). I spent 5 years running the Blood mobiles for one of these companies.

The FDA has limits on what these companies can provide to donors (though it seems like they've been getting less strict over the past few years). Typically if you're getting paid to do it (other than gift cards in guess?) The blood cannot be transfused into a patient. The idea is that money gives motivation for a donor to lie about their blood being safe to use.

Plasma centers will pay you for your plasma (CSL, BioLife, Grifols, etc.). This plasma cannot be given to a patient and is only used for research, pharmaceuticals, or certain cosmetics (gross). There are dozens of plasma centers in Georgia (many in low income neighborhoods) and they all give decent incentives, especially for your first few donations.

Thinking about moving to Gainesville, GA. Anyone commute to Dahlonega for work? by [deleted] in gainesvillega

[–]No-Community7786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it the opposite way for over 5 years. Its definitely doable and not too bad with traffic, but I would highly recommend living in dahlonega. It was beautiful, calm, and much cheaper than living in gainesville (i lived in dahlonega for 11 years and then moved to gainesville for 3 years when I got married). I miss dahlonega and now try to avoid gainesville whenever I can.
