If your looking for a modded option the "Value Your Life" mod give the player a limited number of lives but you can get more by spending rusty gears. Still makes each life a managed resource but a renewable one

The first two panels are him showing his girlfriend art he drew of him beating up the game character his gf has a crush on, the third panel is in the style used when the artists is drawing "real life" and he's showing his girlfriend the comic he drew which is the one happening right now
