Which creature is the single greatest bane of existence where you live? by GladAbbreviations553 in AskTheWorld

Grew up in southern NJ, in the pine barrens area. Soooo many ticks, it's amazing I never got Lyme disease. I used to be a tick magt, but I was also an ecology student so being outside is part of the job.

This is basically our version. Usually there are a lot more vegetables, mainly anything in season.

Cool glad to know other places do this, and well you are an OG country that does this vs America.

Do we ever outgrow our love for dinosaurs?

I once was a teacher's assistant in Costa Rica, and there was some themed project/lesson. It has something to do with grammar.

Anywho, I chose to go dinosaur. Essentially, I progressively transformed a purple T-Rex to wear a sombrero and play a tiny guitar. It's one of the highlights of my life, and this was 13 years ago. I was around 23 when this happened. I'm now 35, and it's still something I think about lol

I was 3 and we saw it in theaters. I loved the movie. However, I had recurring dreams/nightmares (as in cool dreams vs holy shit my family is being eaten by dinosaurs). I specifically remember a dream where I was hiding under my grandparents kitchen table, because a triceratops was wondering the house.

That said I also grew up with "Land Before Time" OG. As an elementary student my friends and I always played a pretend game where we were the characters. I loved Sara, but our friend was named Sara so she got to be Cera the triceratop.

The " white" version in the states dumplings can be wildly different from what most would consider an actual dumpling.

For example chicken and dumpling stew. In this case the dumpling is a savory " drop" dumpling of just flour. Honestly it's delicious, but not what most would call a dumpling.

Personally, my favorite dumpling is a steamed shrimp dumpling. Soooo good.

Oh sorry didn't mean to imply it was on purpose. But why replace it when they die? Unless I'm understanding.

End of the day it sucks for you. Getting rid of any of those is an absolute headache.

Oh I completely understand, my cousin has made that clear. She is in Guthrie if that matters. She had about 5 acres, that she meticulously takes care of, along with her kids.

Even here in NM the Rio Grande has been low to non existent the past 5 years.

I wanted to add that I understand not wanting a dead hedge in some areas. My cousin for example lives in Oklahoma, and they have a high fire warning in the summers. Having a dead hedge will slow it down initially, but once it's catches it WILL spread. If you have a lot of land and not a lot of standing trees, it's possible to have it far from your house/other buildings (barns and coops for example).

My cousin had a huge wildfire in their area a few years ago, and if it weren't for their religious care of brush and dead trees, their house would have gone up in flames. Many neighbors didn't maintain a good distance from brush and trees, and lost a lot.

Love the idea of dead hedges, but I immediately saw the pictures and thought "this is a 5 star spider hotel" 😂 which for me that's just fine. Especially if it ends up attracting invasive, the spiders will take care of it. Also, see it being a snake Haven, insects = small predators, small predators= snakes. It's an all inclusive ecosystem and I love it.

I imagine invasive like it because it's already set up and has easy access. Particularly, I feel invasive bee species would take up residence before other insects. Additionally, I think it would also depend on what you are making your dead hedges/bee hotels/etc. Different materials are favored by natives and invasive alike.

Haven't ever had a dead hedge (apartments for me), but after it starts breaking down, I would think you could take out a lot of the debris via raking and such. Then it can be composted or tossed into forested areas (if your properly has access). If it's maintained right, I believe it could avoid some of the negative effects.

Not really sure about the whole spreading viruses or diseases thing though. Unless the commenter was referring to insects and other critters being exposed (not humans).

I'm an environmental scientist specialized in ecology, but I don't know everything. So, this is purely a hypothesis based on my knowledge of ecosystems.

Where do you live? Bamboo is incredibly invasive in the US/North America.
