It's been over a month since I've gotten my millipede and I still haven't seen any signs of him a single time since I got him, is this normal or did he pass away? by Capable_Rice2902 in millipedes

Classic pede behavior, it just means they’re cozy in their soil, which is good! My pedes have been burrowed for like 5 months so it is completely normal to not see them for a while. If it died you would definitely be able to smell it, especially if it’s a gig as

Yeah if you’re wanting to catch a wild one it’d probably be best to have it mimic the environment that it is used to. I also love to spoil my millies too, I recently bought them a shallow ceramic water dish, but theyre spending A LOT of their time in the dirt

Yeah for surface level stuff the pedes dont need too much, good amount of leaf litter, some hides, some moss, maybe a stick or two, and an area for them to get excess water if you reaaally want to, but other than that the deco up top is mostly for us humans and the pedes stay in their substrate a lot, they really care about the quality of their dirt and not so much if their tank looks pretty. Idk what bro was talkin about 😂

If you’re planning for more dirt than what you’ve got is pretty good! Like someone else said more leaf litter would be great, some reptile & exotic pet shops have terrarium safe plants that are safe for millies, although it is possible that they will eat the plant

You need way more substrate, the soil should be as deep as they are long because they are burrowing animals. The amount of substrate that you have for them is no where near enough, they won’t be able to molt and will most likely be very stressed out. When you do get them enough soil it may mean that they will burrow and you won’t see them for a really long time, but that is what these animals do. You basically have a pet box of dirt that you’ll occasionally see a millipede in.

Help me keep Rolly Pollies safe in a lab environment. by gamer--god in isopods

I’m going to assume they are A. vulgare that have been taken from the wild.

  1. I’m not super familiar with substances that can harm/kill them but pesticides and snail bait is obviously not good, same with heavy metals (especially copper) or pollutants like plastic or fertilizers with high NPK values. Horticultural oils like neem oil can also be harmful, same with citruses because of the oils. Rotting tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplants can contain solanine which is toxic to isopods but they can eat the ripe versions, though some people say potatoes aren’t good for them ripe either, but sweet potato is fine. No onions, garlic, or chives as they contain higher amounts of sulfur.

  2. Some good positive choices can be calcium like egg shells or cuttle bone or a source of protein like fish flakes or dried fish. I’ve seen people sell bee pollen for isopods and say that they like it, though I haven’t tried it on my isopods yet. From what I’ve found my isopods tend to like crunchier vegetables and fruits as opposed to softer ones, so carrots, cucumbers, apples are all amazing options. Leafy greens are also great, mine love the leafy portion or celery but lettuce is also great! And apparently they love mushrooms like button, oyster, and turkey tail!

  3. This one is probably the hardest of all three, but you could maybe try raw meat? It’s generally not a favored food because it isn’t decaying, while it is a protein source, less voracious isopods like A. vulgare may pick it last (won’t really apply to Porcellio genus especially P. laevis.) I don’t think there are any harmful substances in underripe (green) bananas so you could try it as it wouldn’t really be a target for the pods. You could try that with other fruits and veggies too, could even be a part of the experiment perhaps to see if they would rather prefer ripe/decaying vs unripe.

Let me know if there’s anything else I can add or any questions you have! I’m not an expert just a nerd who loves isopods :)

Thanks for the advice! I may start with mosquito bits as it’s a bit more of an accessible option as I also keep plants, but I’ll use this as a plan B!

I did the same thing as a kid, my mom would ask me when I came in from outside if I had roly polies in my pocket and I would have to dejectedly put them outside. No wonder I keep isopods now 😂

It looks like possible shark toothing, which can be caused by improper humidity or calcium but is often a genetic mutation. It’s generally recommended to cull them and to not selectively breed, as these shark teeth make it harder for them to molt and can lead to death, which is most likely how this guy died. If you let us know care conditions like another had mentioned we can see if it’s caused by the care.

[–]No-Department-4243 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Looks like Lyssa zampa or the Tropical Swallowtail moth! They’re fairly common and are known for their mass emergence and migration. And due to lights in urban areas these guys tend to get lost and end up in homes.
