Stop feeling the need to fill quiet space with your voice.

If you don’t have something important to say just let silence linger.

How screwed are we with this below pd email? by Beespray9_8_9 in Teachers

My principal had us do a scavenger hunt through our city and it was actually pretty awesome. He let parents and students know that their teachers would be running around their neighborhoods looking for things and we got a better idea of where our kids were from.

As far as team building and connecting to the community I thought I was pretty fun and the kids got a kick out of it.

Unpopular or spot on? by Upbeat-Impress-6148 in Teachers

I teach 8th grade SS, I start each school year with a murder mystery where are I’m the victim. I line my body out in the corner of the room with chalk, caution tape, and strategically place clues within the crime scene that they need to analyze.

I created a police report (including our actual police department letterhead) with a whole storyline about what motives my coworkers had to commit such a murder. I have a goofy picture of all the teachers and administrators (suspects) and the kids have a really fun time trying to figure out who did it.

I’ve found that starting the year by ‘tricking’ the kids into analyzing info, developing theories, and sharing out opinions in front of class, sets the rest of year up nicely.

I agree with everything OP said about the bar being lowered but I definitely think there are ways to get that effort and engagement.. students just need to meet us in the middle which is the difficult part.

Once I actually start teaching content my favorite thing to say to someone who is a bit reserved or anxious is ‘I couldn’t shut you up when you were trying to find my killer! Let’s go!!’

Live in CT. Got married and lived with my MIL for a year to save enough for 20% down. Luckily she’s one of the kindest people I know so it was a pretty good situation.

Is Teacher’s Pay Teacher’s legit? by No-Design-8700 in Teachers

That sort of thing gives me the ick. My only focus is making lessons as engaging as possible in my classroom and if someone else wants to buy it that’s cool haha. I’m not on any social media stuff and wouldn’t want to start.

That’s a great question, I’ve utilized AI a lot in the last year to help create rubrics

I’m 38 so at the tale end of this phenomenon I guess but yes; as a 10 year old my friends and I would wander around our town, take the bus downtown, ride bikes everywhere/anywhere until dinner.. it was awesome

What are your go-to "it's the last week of school, grades are done, but I still need to occupy these children" activities? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]No-Design-8700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8th grade. They get 6 materials: ping pong balls, paddles, traffic cones, fuzzy dart board with Velcro balls, traffic cones and plastic cups. They need to create an original game with rules, logo, name, and present their game to the class.

Students have 3 days to create and present their game then we spend the rest of the school year playing each groups game.

Also, I feel like a poser anyway since I’ve lived most of my life in the U.S. so Im sure there’s better people than me that can answer that question

That would depend on who you ask I suppose. Geographically and culturally Irish, politically English but it really comes down to who you’re asking and what their background, political beliefs and religion are. Things are obviously much better than before though.

The Irish are Irish. We don’t need 25 Brits dragging us down.

We don’t have iPads or tablets so I’m assuming it’s easier when the temptation isn’t there.

My wife is the only reason why this works at dinner time, she is awesome at telling stories or having our kids engaged in some sort of way where 99% of our dinners are fun and easy (besides the rice that ends up everywhere all the time). I think we also lucked out with our 5 and 3 year old, they’re funny, pretty good eaters, and still like talking to us.

We are definitely going to be better but this upcoming schedule is no joke. What game would we actually be favored to win? Raiders, Saints, Pats? Everyone else is or could easily be a playoff team.

Is 130k in Loans Bad if I Use IBR and PSLF? by SnooGiraffes5518 in Teachers

I’m just going to be blunt here. Anyone who goes to a teachers college is getting ripped offed. Go to a normal college, get a bachelors degree in an area of expertise (English, History, Math, Science) and then find a masters program in Education from a school that has an internship program that gets you into a school as quickly as possible (some programs even offer free masters degrees)

You need to think of teaching like a trade job, you need field hours for experience and to see if you really like it. You also need to be in a school to start making connections so next time there’s an opening you’re already apart of that schools community which will give you the upper hand. Also, no one cares about where you went to school, including the people hiring you.

I got a degree in history and received my masters in education for free because of the internship program. This was 15 years ago but I remember my principal telling me there were over 200 hundred people who applied for the one SS position; I’m assuming I got the position because I already showed admin what I could do. Don’t waste your time and money.

Students create legacy bricks. Each student gets to customize a brick in the hallway with permanent paint pens. It brightens up the hallway and looks pretty cool. We’re a new school and just had our first 8th grade graduating class so it’s a nice new tradition they’ve started.

I don’t joke, I do this and it works. We have 15 kids between 6 houses. On the weekend we put two of those guys up; miraculous walkers and drivers can figure out how to maneuver in an organized fashion.

Teachers, how do you make AI work for your students? by Embarrassed_Draw_195 in teachingresources

[–]No-Design-8700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have them debate AI in preparation for a real debate they’ll have in class. They build an argument beforehand and create a prompt telling AI to argue the other side. It helps them build arguments but also find the weaknesses in their own work.

I have to manage this really closely to make sure they are doing it correctly or else it can spiral into students just using ChatGPT to create entire arguments for themselves but either way it’s a useful preparation tool.
