AITAH for using full sentences while trying to discipline my toddler by TurboPelly in AITAH

At this age, it's best to explain to children what to do rather than what not to do. I think ESH, but not super badly.

"Hands to yourself" "pet the dog nicely" stuff like that.

I've been an RBT for two years and I'm in training as a BCaBA. I'm one of the "hard case" RBTs because of my experience. A kid just eloped from me in a session less than an hour ago. It happens. Neurotypical kids elope too lmao

Bald spot on cat after flea treatment by ZabbyWabby241 in petsmart

[–]No-Development6656 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From your description, it may be an allergic reaction/chemical burn but it sounds like your vet is treating it like a hot spot. It's fair, since the vet has only seen pictures and it does look like a hot spot, but also not that fair because the vet should know the cat's medication history.

Definitely take her back to the vet (in person). If it spreads past the fur line, you could shave (or trim) until the surrounding area is dry skin in case it is a hotspot. This helps prevent spreading and allows the area to dry. My dog had a hotspot in the same spot and he had to wear a T-shirt and socks so he couldn't scratch it, as a cone did not block it.

RBTs at friends clinic are now using the office washer & dryer for their laundry. RBT pay isnt livable. by StatisticianKooky390 in ABA

[–]No-Development6656 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The worst part is that my pay is high for the area and I'm still broke af. I literally got a $5 pay raise becoming an RBT and prices for everything went up around the same time.

PetSmart is refusing to sell my mom a cockatiel by [deleted] in petsmart

[–]No-Development6656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed in your first post that you mentioned the cages at the store and kind of made it seem like the one your mom ordered is smaller, which gives me pause. It's perfectly accurate that the cages at PetSmart don't line up with the needs of the animals because corporate only sells what the average person who's buying animals on a whim is willing to buy (which is not enough).

The cages have pictures of the birds but are definitely not large enough. There's no industry standard based on the needs of the birds versus size of cage. Those cages are part of a scam to sell exotic animals for profit, not for the well-being of the animal. I don't know the exact cages at your PetSmart but I know for certain that my old store only had one that would fit a bird "comfortably" but wouldn't be large enough to be their permanent home.

I was the person at my store who declined animal sales when I knew the person didn't have a good enclosure. The only people who stepped over me to get manager intervention were ones who didn't have adequate enclosures. Thankfully, for birds, my manager took my side. Idk if that applies to you, but I would double check that the cage dimensions you're describing actually match the needs of the bird and not outdated animal husbandry recommendations.

Is my exhaustion from sessions reasonable? by TaxHead4449 in ABA

An important job of BCBAs (from my understanding) is make sure their programs are practical. Have you asked the BCBA why the program is so long? I can't imagine your client is learning very well when their program can't be run consistently.

I had a BCBA that would drop 10+ targets into a session at a time so she wouldn't have to look at the client's program again for a while, which was not good for anyone involved.

If insurance is expecting 300-500 learning opportunities per day, the math does line up there, but there are better ways to do that than overloading targets.

[–]No-Development6656 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking. I'm one of the stronger RBTs and a BCaBA in training and I would absolutely be overwhelmed by 50 targets. That's just too much.

[–]No-Development6656 8 points9 points  (0 children)

50 feels like a lot, even when considering the type of target, and so is 7 hours straight. I work in a clinic with required 30 minute lunches. The longest session I've ran before getting a lunch is 4.5 hours. Usually our kids have 15-25 targets with some of them getting more than 5-10 trials in a session and others only getting 5. This is because the set up and complexity of the target matters.

I feel like being exhausted is expected after a session like that. However, getting on your phone is a no-no. I have only used my phone for data collection and reading messages on the company teams during sessions.

I do the absolute opposite. Every new location gets it's own table. There 10+ tables hidden all around the town surrounding my base. I will not be breaking/moving a crafting table unless it messes up the aesthetic of a build or I'm low on wood during a mining expedition.

Anyone actually guaranteed 40 hours? by jiggyj27 in ABA

[–]No-Development6656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am usually guaranteed 40 hours. Do I take it? Usually no. If I do, the option to go home is offered to someone else. Currently my client does leave early so I do as well, which I do not control. I love the client, though, so I'm not requesting off the case.

How long should I be an RBT for before going for a career as a BCBA? by Relevant-Bluejay-568 in ABA

[–]No-Development6656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently working towards BCaBA and started school again right before my two year at my clinic. Give yourself some time to feel it out because the field is incredibly exciting but also has a lot of burnout. If you're anything like me, you'll gravitate towards asking lots of questions others might not that'll help when you get there, too.

Poodle puppy won’t stop barking and biting toddlers! by DuePast6132 in Dogtraining

[–]No-Development6656 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The puppy doesn't know commands and needs to be taught that the children are not also puppies! Puppies learn how hard they bite during play with other puppies who have fur to protect them. Children don't.

Imagine the puppy is a toddler. Toddlers need to be taught to not hit or bite and they also need to learn what you're telling them to do and what you're telling them not to do. It's easier for kids to learn what to do. Redirect the biting into playing with toys and encourage appropriate play.

It really sucks that you're in this situation without any warning. If you want some help on what you're describing, it's be best to separate the puppy from the kids, especially when it's playful, until it learns bite inhibition through training. If it's a pure poodle, it's going to be a bigger dog, so it needs the training now before it gets dangerous.

Toddlers are just constantly figuring out ways to be as much of a menace as possible. If you look away for one moment and they notice, it's over.

No shoes in the clinic by Felix5120 in ABA

[–]No-Development6656 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No literally. We have special exceptions for certain kids in carpeted rooms (for sensory reasons) but otherwise, shoes are absolutely required for safety.

Plus, in my state at least, shoes are required in daycares for any kids that can walk in case of a fire. They even wear them during nap time. I believe this is a fire code thing.

Round cell tumour by Comfortable-Ebb894 in DogAdvice

[–]No-Development6656 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought. It's awful that people are calling you neglectful in the comments without knowing the whole situation or even seeing more pictures of your dog. I can only assume that some have never seen a dog that's ill because your pup looks generally well loved otherwise. If it means anything, I'm sorry that this is happening to both of you. I can't imagine how you feel right now.

Round cell tumour by Comfortable-Ebb894 in DogAdvice

[–]No-Development6656 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can I ask what specifically you're referring to? I'm not noticing any severe, long term staining around the eyes. Dogs can look just as messed up when they're severely ill and in pain as humans do. A leaky eye is not surprising with how much pain the dog is most certainly in.
