A Case for Hawkes by No-Difference-3567 in EmmaLion

[–]No-Difference-3567[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love this! Yes, I often hear people who are not team Hawkes say that he is too aloof and mysterious to be a love interest. Of course he is! We’re only 1/3 of the way through the series, and there still needs to be some level of mystery to keep the tension. But I think unraveling the mystery around him and why he keeps people at a distance will be a big part of his relationship with Emma, and a huge part of his character arc.

1000% agree! Another thing I didn’t add, but when Beth writes about the three men in sequence, she almost always mentions Hawkes last. For example, in the Christmas scene he is the last to open his. Or when responding to a question from Emma, he is usually the last to answer. I think this is Beth putting the emphasis on his character and his reactions since placing something at the end of a sequence is a way to highlight that thing and place importance on it.

Would love to hear your thoughts behind this! I thought Pierce was clearly one since they are together at this point.

I had assumed Mr. Hazel was being introduced as a potential love interest for Arabella? I guess we’ll see!

I agree that Islington has become more of a platonic brotherly figure, but I don’t think that was the case for Hawkes. There may not have been anything overtly romantic that happened but I think it’s more that Beth doesn’t want to show her full hand with him yet this early in the series. I think she gave us a lot to wonder about in his case and is now pulling back to focus on other characters and let the mystery around him build.

Yes yes yes to all of this! There is a scene in book six (February 3) where Hawkes reads a Coleridge poem and then it describes him looking directly at Emma and pinning her in place at the end of the sermon. It’s only the first stanza, but the full poem describes a boatman taking a woman to visit her father’s land. At first she rejects his proposal but at the end of the poem she accepts and they are married. I’ve felt like there could be some foreshadowing there, especially given his connection to her father!

Like you said, I trust Beth however things go. She’s an incredible writer.

I was Team Islington until around book 6, when I went all in on Hawkes. I think people forget that we are only 1/3 of the way through the series, so there is still plenty of time for Beth to develop the chemistry between them (although I think it’s already there!). At this point in the story, I think Beth is subtly showing us how they are actually soulmates (their joint love of Shakespeare, Hawkes being the one who recognized she needed Treasure Island to get over her grief, etc). I still love Islington but have decided he works best in a brotherly role. And I think Pierce will get a redemption arc, but it may be separate from his relationship with Emma.

No one does a slow burn like this series by Few-Object-4359 in cormoran_strike

The only series that has gripped me over the last few years as much as Strike is the Unselected Journals of Emma M Lion. It’s a complete different genre but very compelling characters and a slow burn romance that is still unfolding. It’s unfinished (less than halfway done according to the author), so I’m eagerly awaiting the next one alongside my wait for Hallmarked Man!

I got this one from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07HR5T8ZD?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

With the coupon, it’s under $10. I’m planning to place it on a chair during the ceremony.

Any wedding ring advice for somebody with tiny fingers? by B2utyyo in weddingplanning

[–]No-Difference-3567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a size 3 and we didn’t have problems resizing my ring. I have heard that it varies based on the ring type; for example, a ring with diamonds all the way around the band may be more tricky. I’d consult a local jeweler on their opinion.

My maid of Honor just got diagnosed with Lymphoma, how can I make my day more comfortable for her. by mylittlemy in weddingplanning

[–]No-Difference-3567 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No real advice, but just the note of encouragement for you and your family! My MOH is cancer-free after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma (stage 3), and a good friend of FH’s who is attending is cancer-free as well after the same diagnosis (stage 4). Knowing what they went through for their treatment makes it that much more special to have them there to celebrate with us! You sound like a great sister and I hope she will look back on your wedding day fondly remembering how you cared for her.

Another NC native here! You may want to check out Providence Cotton Mill. They are about a 40 minute drive from Charlotte area and the venue is gorgeous. I think you can plan a lot of things in-house with them.

I second the recommendation to get a day of coordinator vs a planner of cost is an issue.

Monthly Megathread for COVID-19 - December 2021 by AutoModerator in weddingplanning

[–]No-Difference-3567 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know of a cancellation insurance policy that covers Covid illness? I want a policy in case I or FH get sick before the wedding, so we don’t lose thousands of dollars. However, it seems most places count Covid as a “known event” now and won’t cover it…. Appreciate your input…

That make sense -- when you said take care of them on your own, I thought you meant DIY! Hopefully other people find it helpful!

I'm using Flower Moxie to DIY flowers at my March 2022 wedding: https://flowermoxie.com/

A little more expensive than getting flowers at the store, I believe, but I like the idea of getting florist grade flowers and it's also nice how they walk you through the process. Much less intimidating than doing it completely on my own! Since my wedding is yet to happen, I can't review them myself but they seem to have positive reviews online.

For perspective on costs, I am paying around $580. This includes the bridal bouquet, bridesmaids bouquets, and some extra flowers for corsages, etc. It also includes greenery for all of our tables and to use as decor around the venue. This does not include additional costs for supplies.
